Happy 成人の日 (coming of age day) to all the 18-20 year olds out there! Celebrated on the second Monday of January, there were lots of pretty furisode-clad and newly minted adults enjoying the sunny weather today! I wish we had a party for everyone that turned 21 in the same year when I was that age!

My first time making 七草粥 (ななくさがゆ) - 7-herb rice porridge. It's supposed to help your stomach recover after all the new year's festivities and indulgences! Though we don't drink anymore, we've def been indulging with meals, so this seemed to be on point. haha. I've never made it before, but have made normal okayu (aka jook or porridge) when my husband was sick. The only difference here is that you cook the kabu and daikon and blanch the herbs, then stir it into the okayu.

It's pretty plain though, and I may or may not have eaten it with leftover fried chicken. Lol.

Went out for はつもで the first shrine visit of the year. How are you spending your first day of the new year?

One of my goals was to get back into studying Japanese after taking basically a year off. Luckily, since we live here I still encounter a ton of Japanese in my daily life, but I haven't cracked open a book, took a class or had a formal language exchange (does calling customer support count??) in ages. Here's to catching up on my 2000+ wanikani reviews 😅 in 2023! by @peraperacafe

Happy New Year! In Japan, you don't use あけましておめでとう until after Jan first, so if you're wishing folks happy New Year on the eve, you'd say 良いお年を (よいおとしを) which translates to "have a good year!"🎉🎉

Finnnnnalllly caught up. I started August after a LONG break with 1,398 review and 82 lessons. It took me forever to catch up AND keep up to get to 0 reviews, but I'm happy I finally did! Now I just have to get back into the rhythm of daily reviews since looks like the next few days will be rough with new lessons (planning to tackle 25 a day) and keeping up with those reviews! Hoping this motivation will stick around. ⠀

The only Japanese I've kept up with are my weekly language exchanges, I'm working on a pretttty big side project (guess I can call it that) that's going to be taking up quite a bit of time for the next 5 or so months, so I don't think I'll be very consistent in terms of daily studying, but will do my best! ⠀

Since I finally got my vaccine, I figure it'd be a good time to practice how to say things around it. I got these phrases from @japaneseammo_misa's youtube video (I honestly love her stuff, so helpful), check it out if you haven't seen it yet. ⠀

I went to the mass vaccination site in Tokyo (I'd have to wait till the 27th in my area) and it was a well oiled machine. There must've been hundreds of volunteers moving things along and directing you. While they manage to do 10,000 people a day, you wouldn't have guessed it because aside from the very beginning and the end (when you're waiting) you're never in a crowded room. They separate you into small groups and lead you through different rooms for each process.⠀

とにかく、やっと！昨日、一回目の接種を打ってきた！今日、副反応は腕が痛くて、ちょっと疲れている。でも、できたよかった。友達や家族は二月にワクチンを打ったから、すごく羨ましかった。⠀

Where did July go??
It was an eventful month, with lots of long work hours and epic fatigue, migraines, lack of motivation and....an entire month off of wanikani. We also made our first Etsy sale! 🥳

I'm hoping for more energy and motivation this month and am starting off by sharing my goals:
🦔 Catch up with wani / Kani
🦔 Start studying daily again
🦔 Finish up hiragana / katakana worksheets and chart
🦔 Weekly language exchange meetups again!
🦔 Finish reading three books
🦔 Get vaccinated! (First shot on Monday!)

Happy Sports Day! Usually held in October, but changed to July 23 this year (and July 24th last year, though it was postponed) to coincide with the Olympics! Interesting that back in the 60's they pushed the Summer Olympics to October to avoid Japan's rainy (and probably the horrid heat of summer) season, but this and last year, they kept the games in July. It's been in the mid-90's (35 degrees C) lately so I really feel for all the athletes competing in the sun!⠀
