Florida, I love you…but California nursing has me SPOILED. 😭

And this is exactly why I keep telling nurses to stop looking at an extra nursing license like it’s just another fee.

I decided to get outside of my comfort zone and add another non-compact nursing license to my portfolio, and California reminded me REAL quick why having more than one state license can completely change the type of nursing opportunities you have access to.

We’re talking higher nursing pay, mandated nurse-to-patient ratios, mandated breaks, better resources, stronger workplace protections, and access to hospital systems I couldn’t even apply to without a California RN license.

That doesn’t mean every California nursing job is perfect. It doesn’t mean every nurse needs to move to California either.

But if you’re a nurse who keeps saying you want higher-paying nursing jobs, PRN nursing opportunities, per diem RN jobs, travel nursing jobs, better nurse pay, more schedule flexibility, or more options outside of your current market, at some point you have to ask yourself if your current license is keeping your job search too small.

Because sometimes the opportunity isn’t on another job board.

Sometimes you need another RN license to even see it.

And this is why I’m such a big believer in building a nursing license portfolio instead of depending on one state, one hospital system, or one job market.

I’m from Florida, so I can say this with love 😂…but once you experience certain things in California nursing, it is HARD to unsee the difference.

If you had to choose right now: Florida nursing or California nursing? And tell me WHY. 👀 taken in California by @perdiemplug

Working ICU PRN will have you looking at your own life like, “Okay… I need to get a few things together.”

We check every detail for our patients, but when’s the last time you looked at what your own health insurance covers? Or checked your pay stub instead of just seeing the deposit and moving on?

These are 10 practical life lessons I’m taking outside the hospital. Keep your medication list updated. Have the conversation about who should make medical decisions for you. Get important promises in writing. That stuff deserves your attention BEFORE you need it.

Per diem nursing also taught me to look past the hourly rate. Once I add gas, parking, and the commute, does that shift still make sense? And after working all night, what’s my plan for getting home safely?

Even packing my food and putting my things together beforehand makes a difference. I do enough running around at work. I don’t need to be searching for my keys when it’s time to leave too. 😭

You don’t have to be an ICU nurse to use this advice.

Save this and tell me which one you’ve been putting off. We’re getting it together this week. 💕 by @perdiemplug

Nurses…we REALLY need to talk about these contracts because some of these rates had me staring at the screen like 😐😂

I’m reacting to everything from $1,500 for 36 hours all the way back to the pandemic-era contracts when nurses were seeing $10,000 for 60 hours.

Like…do y’all remember that?! 😭

Obviously the travel nursing market, agency nursing rates, local contracts, PRN nursing jobs, crisis contracts, and weekly nursing pay packages look VERY different now, but I think this is exactly why nurses need to know their numbers before signing anything.

Because $1,500 might work for one nurse and make absolutely ZERO sense for another.

What’s the hourly rate?
How many hours are required?
Is overtime included?
Are you duplicating expenses?
What’s housing going to cost?
How far are you traveling?
Are the hours guaranteed?

That weekly number by itself does not tell me enough.

And after watching nurses make $5K, $7K, even $10K a week during the pandemic, I know some of y’all look at today’s nursing contracts and immediately say, “Yeah…absolutely not.” 😂

So I want the experienced travel nurses, PRN nurses, agency nurses, and local contract nurses to help everybody out in the comments.

What is the MINIMUM weekly contract you would accept right now?

And what immediately makes you pass on a contract?

Drop your numbers and your advice because I know there are nurses reading the comments trying to figure out what a good nursing contract should actually look like in this market. taken in California by @perdiemplug

Everybody can’t be a super commuter… and honestly, everybody doesn’t want to be.

Some nurses are not trying to fly across the country, sleep in hotels, or be away from home every week just to make extra money. Some of y’all want a solid nursing opportunity in your own backyard, and that’s exactly why I wanted to put this one on your radar.

This is a seasonal RN contract in Sarasota, Florida for Cardiac day/night, and it’s a good reminder that local nursing jobs, seasonal nursing contracts, PRN nursing jobs, per diem nursing opportunities, and short-term RN contracts are still out here if you know where to look.

A lot of nurses think the only way to increase their income is through travel nursing or super commuting, but that’s not always true. Sometimes the play is finding a high-paying local nursing job that lets you make more money without flipping your whole life upside down.

If you’ve been looking for a way to earn more while staying close to home, start paying attention to Florida nursing jobs, local contract nursing jobs, cardiac RN jobs, day shift nursing jobs, night shift nursing jobs, and seasonal RN opportunities like this.

More money doesn’t always have to mean more distance.

Sometimes it just means knowing where to look. 👀 taken in California by @perdiemplug

Last month I made a little over $13,000 and honestly, it was one of my worst months financially.

But let me say this before somebody starts clutching pearls 😂 it was a slower month on purpose.

I took my foot off the gas, went home more, rested more, and gave myself some room to breathe. That’s one thing I really want nurses to understand about PRN nursing, per diem nursing, and flexible nursing income. Every month is not going to look the same, and that does not automatically mean something is going wrong.

Some months are for stacking. Some months are for survival. Some months are for rest.

That’s the beauty of having more control over your schedule, your shifts, your nursing income, and your time. I didn’t have my strongest income month, but I did have a month where I got to prioritize myself, and that matters too.

People love to talk about high paying nursing jobs, PRN nurse income, per diem pay, shift flexibility, and making more money as a nurse, but we also need to talk about having the freedom to slow down when you need to.

$13K might be “low” for me, but being able to make that while also protecting my peace? I’ll take that.

That’s what schedule freedom, nurse flexibility, PRN lifestyle, and building your career around your real life is about.

Be honest… are you in a season where you’re trying to stack, or are you in a season where you need rest? taken in California by @perdiemplug

If you’re applying to California hospitals and wondering why it’s taking forever, here’s one tip that can really speed things up:

Stop only applying to the major cities.

Everybody wants Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco, Sacramento, and all the big-name areas, which means the competition is crazy. If you really want to break into California nursing, start looking at the smaller cities right next to those bigger markets. A lot of nurses overlook them, and that gives you a better shot at getting noticed faster.

That’s the play.

You still get access to California hospital jobs, California nurse pay, and strong opportunities, but with less competition sitting on top of the application. If your goal is to land a staff nursing job in California faster, you need to be strategic, not just hopeful.

A lot of people are spending months applying to the same crowded hospitals when they could be targeting nearby cities and getting interviews sooner.

If I was trying to get hired in California right now, I would be searching for smaller surrounding cities, neighboring hospital systems, less competitive markets, and openings that other nurses keep sleeping on.

Sometimes it’s not that you’re unqualified. Sometimes you’re just applying where everybody else is.

That little shift can save you a lot of time. taken in California by @perdiemplug

I can talk about PRN nursing all day…but the RESULTS are what matter to me. 😭

One mentee landed a Med-Surg/Tele per diem job in California paying over $1,000 a shift.

Another got the Kaiser offer.

Another landed PRN ICU at Kaiser in Panorama City for $1,120 per shift.

And another secured an Oregon nursing opportunity paying $97/hour with the flexibility to work up to four shifts a week.

THIS is why I’m always talking about having the right nursing resume, PRN job search strategy, interview preparation, nursing licenses, hospital applications, and high-paying per diem opportunities in front of you.

These nurses were looking for California nursing jobs, Kaiser nursing jobs, Oregon nursing jobs, PRN RN positions, per diem nursing jobs, higher-paying nursing opportunities, flexible nurse jobs, and better nurse pay—and now they’re actually landing them.

I don’t want nurses just applying everywhere and hoping for the best.

I want you positioned to actually get the callback, get the interview, and get the OFFER.

Same nurse. Better strategy. Different results. ⚡

And if you’re tired of trying to figure out PRN nursing by yourself and you’re ready to actually build a strategy around your resume, licenses, applications, interviews, and job search, comment “ME NEXT.”

I’ll get you the info to book a call so we can talk about what your PRN journey could actually look like with the right support.

Because I don’t want you just watching everybody else post their wins.

I want you to be next.

88 denials. And she STILL got the Northern California nursing job. 😭

Some of y’all get 3 rejection emails and decide the whole state doesn’t want you.

No ma’am. 😂 APPLY ANYWAY.

If you’re looking for Northern California nursing jobs, California RN jobs, PRN nursing positions, per diem jobs, hospital nursing jobs, or higher-paying nursing opportunities, rejection is part of the process.

But after denial #20? I’m also looking at that résumé. 👀

Make sure your nursing specialty, recent experience, certifications, California RN license, patient acuity, ratios, and relevant skills are EASY to find.

Sometimes you need to keep applying.

Sometimes you need to fix the résumé.

Usually? You need to do both.

You only need one yes. taken in California by @perdiemplug

Instead of updating lame relationship statuses, use Facebook to make you some money.

I’m so serious.

There are nurses in Facebook groups finding PRN jobs, per diem jobs, local contracts, agency shifts, and higher paying nursing opportunities every single day while other people are just being nosey.

If you know where to look, Facebook can become part of your job search strategy real quick.

That’s why in this episode of we don’t gatekeep around here, I’m putting y’all on to the Facebook play and showing you how nurses are using Facebook groups to find more flexible nursing jobs, better rates, and new opportunities.

If you’re a nurse and you’re not using Facebook to help you find work, you might be leaving money on the table.

Have you tried this strategy yet? Have you found jobs through Facebook? taken in California by @perdiemplug
