Iā€™ve been floating when I walk ever since Tuesday night at 9:23pm. To say this doesnā€™t feel special, affirming, next level would be playing it too cool. Ive proudly been a part of winning television programs, Canadian Screen Awards for CBC Olympics & countless international & national wins for All Round Champion.I love to win as a team. In university I won a lot. But we never won a team title while I was there. Iā€™d trade any one of my solo wins to hoist a trophy with my friends. This however is the first time Iā€™ve ever been recognized for an award as an individual for my work in television.Itā€™s a bit surreal. Like when my editor called me to tell me My Motherā€™s Daughter made the Canadian Bestsellers list in 2021. Like this June when Paul B. & Sherali called me and asked me to co-host the morning show for the CBC Winter Olympics.Tears. My relationship with outside validation, awards, medals, trophies changed dramatically after 2004. It was no longer the goal. So no, this was not anything I fixated on and I didnā€™t know that nominations were going live when they did. Instead Iā€™ve devoted myself to not taking any experience for granted, being fully alive inside them and on my sense of gratitude. This wasnā€™t a need. Sure, itā€™s popped into the back of my mind, like ā€œthat would be cool if it happenedā€œ but not more than that. Hereā€™s the truth, I know Iā€™m good. I know even when you are authentic, your brand of being is not for everyone. And that doesnā€™t rattle me much anymore. I know I want to grow, get better for every take, every project, every countdown until we go live. I also know that praise like this is the sum of effort seen and unseen overtime. And by being given opportunities. There have been many people behind the scenes in this new field of play that are fierce supporters of mine. You know who you are. Some of you are in this post. And the many of you that support me as observers & my IG besties. You know how I feel. šŸ«¶šŸ¾This feels tremendous. Thatā€™s a wrap on All Round Champion. We compressed our usual 3 month shooting schedule into two. Itā€™s been a whirlwind. We all went in knowing we have nothing to left to prove. And not to others Iā€™d say, mainly to ourselves. Our show has won numerous television awards from an Emmy to Canadian Screen Awards & others in between. This season was different for me. I played more on camera, took chances with my delivery and energy. Let things be less technical and more personality. I hope it lands. I was nominated for an Emmy for ARC this March, in the same category Meryl Streep won last year. No comparison, however, it unlocked something in me. I said: Bish you belong. Bish you are THAT talented. And so this time I gave myself more permission to be me on camera. I lived up to Host, Writer and Producer credits that appear beside my name at the end of each episode. This license to just be & feel confident in it has been freeing. And itā€™s also because Iā€™m given total support and creative freedom.Hereā€™s to the best crew & glam squad. Thank you! Back to life. Back to reality.One of the funny things about working in television is that as soon as a project wraps, everyone asks each other, ā€œSo, whatā€™s next?ā€Some people are already onto another show. Others start something new in a few weeks. Thatā€™s life when you do gig work.Iā€™m having a blast co-hosting Trackside, and Iā€™ll be covering the Commonwealth Games for CBC later this summer.But the goal I talk about the least is also the one that matters most to me right now: finishing the manuscript for my second book. Itā€™s been a three year struggle, but September is my personal deadline.I must. And I will.So, whatā€™s next? Finally finishing what I started.Commitment is keeping the promises we make not only to others, but to ourselves. Itā€™s showing up for you even when it feels selfish. Itā€™s looking in the mirror and feeling proud of the person looking back.Go you. Go me. by @perditafelicien
