Timeline of a storm, the rain we’ve all been waiting for. Well we got it yesterday, breaking about a six week heatwave here in Provence, and just when we thought it was over, thunderstruck again. But we’ve been watching with great concern, horrendous fires spreading through the southwest of France and other areas, watching incredible scenes of bravery, of firefighters and locals in the midst of absolute catastrophic danger trying to protect their homes, their stock, wildlife and their lives. I’m in awe of these people. Bonnieux and surrounds have been shrouded in smoke from these fires, a sobering reminder. On checking news this morning, I don’t think the drenching rain we had, reached the fires, for us it was a welcome relief to the heat and a soaking of everything needed, my bees seemed to know it was coming and disappeared completely. The girls were back this morning buzzing happily, drying off. Let’s just hope, while our attention remains with the rest of France, things change soon…. 🌧️ 🌩️🌪️

The daily buzz, it’s been kinda busy. It’s summer and attack of the hornets has well and truly started, nasty big f***ers. The bees are amazing, just going about their bee business, fanning the hive to cool it, disposing of trespassing wasps in seconds, not even concerning themselves with the bigger threat of hornets now lurking to carry them off to a dark place. That might be because I’m on the case. To say I’ve become obsessed with hornets might be an understatement, but after seeing my bees snatched and carried off, it’s hard to stomach. After speaking to all the experts, my bee keeping mates here, and watching a million reels and YouTube videos, and chatting to ChatGPT on controlling hornets, we made a hornet barrier for the hive. The first couple of days after installing it, I spent hours sitting with a zapper racket and picked off all the hornets taking advantage of the slower bees, until my bees learnt the new security arrangements and could make their way in swiftly through the mesh cage. It’s definitely stopped hornets from getting in the hive, which is the worry now, and the pressure is off the bees. We also put a larger sunscreen up, after six weeks of extreme heat with no end in sight, hope it gives them some better protection. The bees meanwhile have been completely unfazed by any of it, they’ve all got their jobs to do and they just keep doing it, and the girls are bringing back pollen all day. To sit at the hive and watch them daily is so enjoyable, the whole area has the most beautiful nectar aroma and the buzz of the bees is heavenly….that is, until I spot a hornet….. 💥 🐝 🐝 🍯

One of the most uplifting and cheerful local identities in my village is Olivier @cinemanouche and I’m lucky enough to have him as a neighbour and friend. If you visit Bonnieux, take a walk up Rue de la Republique and call in to meet him, a visit to his shop is a walk down memory lane, cinematic memorabilia you have to see to believe and Olivier is always happy to show his collections. You might even find his iconic colbalt blue deux chevaux parked out the front or Olivier sun baking….😘🚙 💙.
