Lucy and Matt move into a new home, one that Matt insists on buying even though it's way out of their league. Lucy and the children find it hard to adapt to their new home and Lucy discovers a mysterious photo of the family who lived there before them. What starts as a curiosity turns into something that is more sinister.

This one isn't the best Jane E James but it's not bad considering she delivers on the mystery and shock value factor.

Earlier when I wanted a break from series books I would pick up a simple romance. I used to call them 'palate cleansers' and the perfect way to reset before the next serious read. Today it's a Jane E James that serves the same purpose. The books have impossibly twisted plots with morally dark grey to black characters and the endings always have an improbable twist.

This is the first book by this author and I simply loved it. Of course, I cannot say anything about her life served as a reminder about childhood but one thing was definitely a connection. The part about her bond with her cousins, that was definitely something I understood.

Absolute 5 star read!

A story that starts off as a normal day at a barber shop with a retired gentleman speaking about moving to live with his daughter and then spirals into sci-fi. That was definitely not what I was expecting.

There are more such stories in A Place of her Own - stories drawn from life, experiences and wild imagination. Compiled by Arunmozhi Nangai, this collection is a must add to your personal libraries because you will go back to read them over and over again because of how wonderful the stories are.

Definitely a must read. by @perfectlycrazybooks

A second chance romance that actually makes sense!

Iris Nightingale works on a strict schedule - work, run, sleep, repeat. A cycle that has been unbroken since her marriage failed. That was until Hunter walks in and upends her work life, her schedule and her peace.

Natalie Cooper has written a romance not for young love but the kind of love you find after the end of the one you thought was forever. A simple storyline with great characters can still make for an amazing read.

Definitely worth your time.

These are the books that come back to me each time I encounter a situation or experience. Apart from superior writing they have connected beyond the reading experience.

This one hits hard because the protagonist is broken herself but in her quest to build herself she becomes the strength of so many others.

This one taught me so much and so many people's choices made so much sense after learning about aro-ace people.

Shuggie breaks your heart because all he wants is a normal life where he is a kid being cared for by his mother and not the other way round. The portrayal of alcoholism was so real and brutal that it touched a nerve.

I read it overnight. The story was real hopeless and unforgettable for its portrayal of how families can destroy themselves under the guise of holding up traditions.

Human love and betrayal collides with artificial intelligence in this story where a robot learns she cannot rely on humans promises because we understand forever in very different ways.

There is a discussion James has with Voltaire in his dream about whether people are born inherently evil, when Voltaire disagrees, then James questions then how could something as heinous as slavery exist.

James or Jim is a slave, a character you might remember from Mark Twain's Huckleberry Finn. This story is from the viewpoint of Jim. The whole story of Huckleberry Finn feels very different when you hear the slave's point of view.

I have read several books on slavery, how it started, how it propagated, how it choked away identities, how it took away dignity and how it rewrote the fates and futures of thousands of African people. James offers a special perspective which I had not realised before - language. How slaves were forced to speak in a certain way. How their language was stifled and suppressed like they were not allowed to speak like everyone else. Like they were not even offered the dignity to sound like white people and instead had to sound a forced format of stupid so that the slave masters could feel a false sense of supremacy.

Definitely a must read.

Ever since Bram Stoker wrote Dracula, Vampires have taken centre stage as the foremost supernatural creatures who have been imagined, reimagined and loved over the centuries. These 5 books are my recommendations for the best alternative vampire lore. I have two on my TBR but they are from my on repeat authors so definitely great reads.

A wedding turns into a murder when the Abney family gathers for Blythe Abney's wedding.

Blythe Abney is the founder and head of Stone Media, her three daughters, Allison, Grace and Kit are coming together to attend their mother's wedding. The wedding becomes more than a happy family gathering because Blythe is a heavy handed matriach who cannot separate her business and family life.

Each character is grey, no one is free and clear of wrong doing. Blythe being the overbearing, controlling mother is projected clearly and you can only hate her.

Great job by the narrators too who added a bit of drama to the narration.

This is currently only on Audible.

Starts as a mystery, turns into a flawed friendship story, moves to the drama genre, and then remembers it's a mystery book and finishes the story.

A bachelorette party ends in the death, possible murder of one friend. Then the story quickly shifts to spending the next 150 pages on detailing the lives of the characters. Not as a way that is helpful to solve the murder but more of an indulgence. Then when the murderer is revealed it is so underwhelming that you yawn and wonder why you wasted your time reading this one.

Totally missable!
