YES there is actually a real scientific basis for the idea that Botox can affect mood, and it’s more interesting than simply “you can’t frown, so you’re happier.”

🧠 The science: the “facial feedback” hypothesis

Your brain doesn’t just create emotions → facial expressions. The communication can work in the other direction too:

Emotion → facial muscle activation → sensory feedback to the brain → reinforcement of the emotional state

When you repeatedly contract the corrugator/procerus muscles to frown, sensory signals from those muscles may contribute to maintaining negative emotional states.

Botulinum toxin temporarily reduces that muscle activity. The proposed mechanism is essentially👇🏼
