Speed is a skill. And like any skill, it needs to be trained.

Acceleration in squash isn’t simply about moving faster. It’s the ability to produce force quickly, apply it in the right direction, and organise the body efficiently to create movement.

Effective speed development builds:

• First-step acceleration
• Efficient foot contacts and force application
• Rate of force development
• Braking and re-acceleration
• Multidirectional speed
• Coordination at high movement velocities

These qualities underpin the explosive actions that happen repeatedly on a squash court — getting out of the T, reacting to an opponent, changing direction and creating time on the ball.

Speed development shouldn’t sit outside squash preparation as an optional extra.

It’s a physical quality that needs to be developed, trained and progressed over time.

Speed underpins physical performance. Train it. by @performancelabs.nz

🇳🇿 → 🇺🇸 Performance Labs is heading to the US!

From 23 October, I’ll be travelling across the US, connecting with university and club squash programmes, coaches and high-performance practitioners.

The focus? Sharing insights from years of working in elite sport, combining strength & conditioning, sport science, GPS technology and performance planning to help athletes perform at the highest level.

I’ll be visiting San Diego, Boston, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York and Philadelphia, before joining Paul Coll at the US Open to support his campaign.

An opportunity to share knowledge, learn from others and build new relationships across the high-performance sporting community.

If you’re a coach, athlete, university programme or organisation interested in connecting, I’d love to hear from you.

Send me a DM and let’s connect while I’m in the US.

Heading state side in a few weeks for the US Open but before getting to Phily I’ll be connecting with some great people around Boston, Rhode Island, Connecticut and New York.
I’ll be doing some guest lectures at universities, presentations to coaches and athletes and just catching up with great squash minds.
I still have some time available on my itinerary so if you want to connect then get in touch. by @performancelabs.nz

Sometimes athletes don’t need more or less coaching, they need BETTER coaching.
That means mixing structured, high instruction, technical sessions with challenges that let the athletes to figure things out themselves.
Coaches set the challenge, athletes bring the energy. taken in Auckland, New Zealand by @performancelabs.nz

You don’t always get
WHAT YOU GIVE.

But you always give
WHO YOU ARE.

Always measure yourself by how you handled the things within your control - NOT THE OUTCOME. taken in Auckland, New Zealand by @performancelabs.nz

Acceleration helps you get to the ball,

Your ability to decelerate helps you control what happens next.

There is no point being all gas pedal and no breaks.

The ability to absorb force rapidly, control and reposition your body is critical if you want to move well repeatedly - not just once.

Build the breaks
Control the movement
Be ready to go again

Train the qualities that transfer onto the court

Most athletes think footwork is just about moving faster.
At the elite level, it is about adjusting faster - repositioning the feet earlier, organising the body under pressure, and creating force efficiently from constantly changing positions.

Reactive style work and variations challenge the ability to:

* reposition the feet under pressure
* split step and reaccelerate
* create force rapidly in changing directions
* dissociate upper and lower body movement
* maintain balance while reacting cognitively

In squash, the hands and eyes often need to solve the problem before the feet are fully set.
The best movers in the world are constantly making micro-adjustments while producing force and momentum efficiently.

Movement quality is not just physical capacity.
It is timing, reactions, coordination, stiffness, rhythm and decision making under pressure.

Training the body and brain together matters.
