“ Reflect upon itself ”; an artwork responding to non-place
W1.5m x H1.05m, Self Adhesive Reflective vinyl
.
The non connects space, time and the human condition creating a place for society to examine itself; a place for self-reflection, where transformation is possible, imagination can freely roam and open dialogue is inspired. This is a work that through symbolism and abstraction reflects the surroundings of its environment and the people that pass through it, offering an opportunity for contemplation.
.
Like a fleeting thought it may go unnoticed or it may inspire a moment of contemplation

Place (non) Place, an exhibition by POST Artists
.
This is an exploration of (non)place.
.
From the perspective of the imaginary non is the only place; the place that holds the common aspirations, a place for self-reflection, where society can examine itself. It is all the dystopias or utopias, the eery creations of digital worlds that lack humans or nature…images of forlornness and emptiness.
.
The imaginary non place follows the flow of the world, ie. the digital world of social media. It tiks & toks all day blocking any critical or intelligent thought. It is commodified and has entered the stock market. It promotes vanity, authoritarianism and bigotry. The imaginary non-place  is produced by AI existing only in two dimensions in an unearthly universe of polluting / polluted souls (avatars). Junkspace.
.
In the imaginary, the non place holds hope infused with nihilistic cynicism, it is sober and angry. It calls for a stillness that feels unnatural, yet necessary. Like a meditation, an emptying of content, a return to nothing.

Much of the organisation of our towns and cities involves defined spaces to live, shop, work and play, which we inhabit and experience as places. But alongside these are less defined spaces. Vague and elusive, purposely uninviting parts of the urban environment.
They loiter at the edge of memories.
We pass through them and instantly forget them.
.
Engaging with the Atrium Space at Barbican Arts Group, seven artists from POST Artist Network undertake an exploration of (non) places. Working in dialogue with each other they have produced an exhibition across disciplines and artistic media. Researching disparate aspects of the (non) place, they investigate it as a productive place for artistic practice, seeking its capacity to resonate with the conditions of contemporary life, to reveal or to speculate on things to come.
.
ABOUT POST ARTIST NETWORK
POST is a peer-led network for artists who respond to place and public space. POST stages site-specific projects reflecting the diverse practices of its members. Previous projects include Canalology, a series of artworks along the River Lea in Tottenham, Parables Displaced in a church for the Whitstable Biennale Satellite program, Ta·da, for an artist-run space in a laundrette Copenhagen and Away Day in Wandle Park, Colliers Wood. by @performarch

.
This is an exploration of (non)place.
.
(Non) place has no foundations, it’s not routed, it cannot defend itself.
.
(Non) place does not need to defend itself because it has no territory or clear form
It’s a fleeting notion where our bodies are levitating.
.
(Non) place is unnatural, made by impossibilities. It is overly efficient and antisocial.
.
(Non) places are a global enterprise - produced and reproduced through the consumption of energy, fossil fuels and the planet as a financial strategy by greedy councils.
.
This is an exhibition of (non) place. It takes place in a stairwell, the Atrium space of the Barbican Arts Group. @bagtrust For the temporary time of 2 weeks the inconspicuous stairwell is the destination for the final show of POST Artists.

Place (non) Place
.
The non connects space, time and the human condition creating a place for society to examine itself;
.
non places in a social context become the (non) bodies that are stripped out of their rights of citizenship; the prisoner, the refugees, the occupied native, bare life
.
(non) bodies that exist unnoticed in daily life; the unhoused, the sick, the cleaner, the taxi driver, the waiter, the security guard
.
(non) bodies that exist in suspension, in still time waiting towards; bodies stuck in traffic, waiting in the train station, waiting for a medical appointment, waiting for the shift to end, waiting for a gender transition.
.
This is an exhibition of non place. Trying to demarcate it, recognize it, occupy it. An exhibition in a stairwell, the Atrium space of @bagtrust , where we are temporarily invited to be.

For Marc Auge non places are the spaces that do not allow inhabitation or personal expression, generic places for passing through without leaving traces. Whether on an urban scale or the interiors of a building, they are controlled and behaviourally scripted spaces lacking the sense of history and place; motorways, airports, malls, stairwells, lift carts, drivethrough hotel rooms for temporary stay.
The exhibition takes place in a stairwell, an interior (non) place where architecture and inhabitants must conform to fire regulations and social norms of passage. Named by the Barbican Arts Group the Atrium space, the stairwell demands its own place! taken in Haggerston by @performarch

Models are an architectural tool that is nowadays replaced by the rapidly evolving 3d digital modelling software technologies. Yet, they hold a quality that is a shame to omit; the grasp of volume and the sculptural qualities of architecture, alongside the allowance to think with our hands through ‘playing’.
.
Returning to models for this project was a joyful experience that confirmed their value as another form of language to represent space.
Swinging from drawing to building this project incorporates cyanotype, dialogue, sketching, model-making, installation, film and storytelling in a game of translation, transgression and transcription between art and architecture.

Architect Neave Brown completed the Alexandra and Ainsworth Estate @alexandraandainsworthestate in London NW8 0SN, 1968.
Artist @mary_yacoob inspired by the building’s section drawings, created her cyanotype diagrammatic artwork ‘Constructor’ in 2019.
Architect / Performance-maker Aliki Kylika interpreted the ‘Constructor’ as an architectural plan in 2020.

Keen to explore where this dialogue between visual art, architectural drawings and building may lead, the project ‘BLUEPRINTS: a dialogue’ was born.
During 1-8 of October Mary & Aliki are joined by artist, curator and former engineer Marco Cali @enriccoviii and artist, writer and creative coder @helena_wee to transform the ‘Constructor’ into a 1:1 sculptural form, following a playful interpretation between drawing, model-making and building and incorporating slippages in the translation along the way.
.
Join us for two drawing workshops and fruitful conversations on language and representation that will include installation, model-making, film, and storytelling.

In the process of architectural design various tools are used, each one establishing a different language for representing the reality of a building. Transitioning between languages slippages in translation naturally occur.

Thoughts inspired by public art.

Bodies in the Age of mechanical reproduction.
.
In his essay ‘The work of Art in the Age of mechanical reproduction’ Walter Benjamin discusses the shift of the value and discourse of art from the traditional unique and authentic production to a mechanically reproduced work.
.
On a similar vein, the industrialization of the human body is entirely normalised in the contemporary thinking of the individual, evident with the normalisation of apps measuring our body functions (steps, heart rate, blood pressure, etc). Scientific data of the body has enabled us to fine tune our dietary resources in terms of vitamins, proteins, etc. leading to the current explosion of dietary variations and food supplements. The target is to enhance or ensure the condition of our bodies as healthy machines that can maintain productivity for as long as required.
.
This objectification of the body as a measured machine removes its traditional value as an authentic creation of nature, connected to the ritual of life. Instead it becomes part of a mass production, ‘inherently based upon the praxis of politics’.

The fragmented body constructed as a whole.
.
In the lacanian analytical theory when we are first born we experience our body as fragments, unable to control our movement or understand the parts that formulate us. A state of anxiety that is resolved with the mirror image, the image of a whole formulated body that whilst only a reflection becomes a driving force.
.
We seek systems of harmony in the world and construct structures that (only as an illusion) build them.
.
I d love to know the thoughts behind this sculpture! @baldwinsculptor Thank you for the art! ❤️

.
The female body as a reproductive machine.
.
The recent debate on abortion rights that has entered the legislation of the United States alongside other countries, has shed light to the global social demand on women to continue the expansion of humanity by reproducing.
.
A demand raised by fear for the death of the old world power structures, for the death of financial stability and for the death of the individual emphasised with the pandemic.
.
This reaction is reminiscent of the mediaeval ‘witch-hunts’, a practice that ensured the supply through reproduction and the maintenance of a ‘proletariat working class’ in the turbulent times of the transition from feudal to capitalist economies, as Silvia Federici eloquently illuminated in the ‘Caliban and the Witch’.
.
In this light, the position of female bodies in the systems of power is significant; women have the power to turn the wheel of history and the current time makes this responsibility critical.
Breed, not breed or where, with whom and how to breed does make a difference.
.
