Dear @nezlarevue team, thank you for this lovely surprise and the beautifully summarised review. I did a little squeal of “Oh!” 🥹❤️ Reviews in general help so much for unusual books, but I was so happy to discover this especially.

For new readers & followers here, head over to olfiction.com to learn more about Demo Accords.

The more we explore, educate and discuss, the better for all. I was proven completely wrong; last year I wasn’t sure if my “weird little book” could reach people, be read and appreciated by more than a handful of extreme fragrance nerds and… turns out there are more of us than I realised and that I managed to distil something essential to the just over 100 pages that speak to much more than niche interest.

Speaking of being proven wrong, in an odd way perfumers have to not only tolerate that sensation but to actively seek it out. To build the best possible chances for your own development and the future enjoyment of the wearers of fragrance, taking some creative risks and seeking out learning; trying new things with old formats, old things with new materials… requires a mindset of tolerating cognitive discomfort. The rewards are spine-tinglingly good. A moment when you realise that a replacement of a problematic material has not only worked but made the composition more beautiful. Feedback that a daring concept was well-received. A realisation that NEZ has featured your radically vulnerable and open political perfume book.

A minor correction to the published review: I’m not self-taught (other than in the sense that every perfumer is ultimately self-taught). I have been working professionally as a perfumer since I began my studies and training 20 years ago, and was initially an employed perfumer in three businesses before Nick and I started Olfiction. I have learned on the job from perfumer mentors within the (albeit smaller) UK industry for all that time. It’s important to me to honour the perfumers I learned from throughout my career, and would not want to erase their expertise, mentorship, and guidance by misrepresenting myself as self-taught. I am an independent perfumer, but not an autodidact. by @perfumer.pia

It’s time for a new intro! Hi, I’m Pia, an independent perfumer. I’m originally from Finland and have been based in UK since 1992. My life has always featured fragrance (first selling it and collecting it as a teen, later working as a training manager for a distributor, then becoming a Junior Perfumer at Lush, going on to work for two further fragrance businesses after that and then co-founding Olfiction with Nick Gilbert in 2016).

I love science fiction, gaming and other nerdy things (lifelong Muppet and Henson fan girl) and watch Columbo & Murder She Wrote as comfort telly. I accidentally did a bit of an Agatha Christie with fragrance regulations (started researching them so thoroughly that I now have expertise in the topic beyond what is typical among perfumers). I’m dynamically and invisibly disabled with some chronic illnesses which can make life a bit unpredictable.

Thank you for being here and I hope to meet many of you during our events and popups. by @perfumer.pia

Some of my perfume creations from 2025:
- Soul Notes, the debut forest bathing and komorebi-inspired perfume for @soulnotes.co

- Exhibited @artandolfaction Unveiling The Essence with “Iconic”, an iris-cosmetic cream scent inspired by my memories of 80s luxury face creams.

- A bespoke guaiacwood-tonka-sandalwood perfume for the biggest art patron we found to raise funds for Demo Accords. I wrote a piece for @meatfortea latest issue about the process.

- The ten perfumes with their open formulas for Demo Accords, plus a handful of bonus accords for here to promote the project. 🔗 in bio or head to www.demoaccords.com

- The six first perfumes for @kida.kyo (my personal favourite that is Awakening, with two kinds of yuzu essential oil & a lasting crisp citrus note tempered by mossy florals; the runaway success has been Dulcet, a mochi and burnt sugar gourmand).

I want to thank everyone who has worn, enjoyed, reviewed, talked about, bought, and enjoyed the fragrances I create. And I recognise what a uniquely privileged position I am in, being able to work using the myriad materials I have access to and holding amazing partnerships (find out more at www.olfiction.com).

None of this would be possible without @nickrgilbert and @olfictionlimited which is the fragrance studio & consultancy we co-founded nearly 10 years ago (that milestone will be spring -26). by @perfumer.pia

LOOK WHAT ARRIVED TODAY 😍 Thank you, @aliceduparcq for this special delivery and since we pre-ordered, we’ll have a copy each soon. I’d love to get mine signed when I next see you.

Readers, perfume lovers, everyone: for years, the question of “where should I start with my growing interest in perfume?” has only had a handful of adequate literary answers and now, here is probably the best one to date. An affable and accessible intro to the world of fragrance, of course it would be Alice who manages to knit together interesting snippets of history, olfaction, fact and fragrance stories in such a way that everyone will feel welcome.

Come meet Alice and buy her book (and get it signed!) at out November @thepopupperfumery (DATE TO BE ANNOUNCED). by @perfumer.pia

As I got home today, there was a parcel from @kraftysmellz and as I opened it, Taisto thought it might contain treats or toys for him.

SO unfair!

(I’ll tell you more about the actual contents of that parcel soon). by @perfumer.pia

The rain started sometime before morning.
I don’t remember hearing it begin.
Just the sound of it against the window
when I opened my eyes,
and that pale Zurich light that makes it difficult
to tell whether the day has started at all.

Coffee.
A book left open where I stopped reading it.
Keys where they always are.
Strange how quickly things return to their places.
Even us.
Or at least, we think we do.

Librido.
Sandalwood, mostly.
But not the polished, immaculate kind.
This one feels older.
Warm wood in a cold room.
Torn pages from an old book, left in the attic of the house you grew up in.
Skin beneath yesterday’s clothes.
Something quietly intimate that refuses to explain
why it feels familiar.

I’ve been looking for something like this for years.
I think..but it feels right.

Outside, footsteps disappear into wet pavement.
Trams pass.
Doors open. Doors close.
The city resumes exactly where I left it.
As if nothing happened.
As if I never left.

I close the book.
Finish the coffee.
Put on my coat.
The sandalwood is still there.
So why does everything familiar
feel slightly out of place?

Did you catch the Live with @christophelaudamiel ? Here’s a clip, and you can watch the whole thing from the saved video on his profile grid.

We covered two Demo Accords formulas, Christophe made a SHOCKING REVELATION about himself, and we discussed our opinions on the question of whether perfumers should review perfumes. by @perfumer.pia

Can perfumers review perfumes by others or is it always a conflict of interest? There are authors who are still readers (as good authors tend to be), and some may even have started in a book reviewing space. Some choose to carry on discussing books by others; some make a point of not being in “reader spaces.” by @perfumer.pia

Maybe I could just start going through it, one book at a time and possibly read little sections here, tell you who the book might be good for… by @perfumer.pia
