This hand-tooled leather belt by Shirley Jackson Whitaker does more than complete a look. It carries history.

Featuring Frederick Douglass and imagery that calls forward the memory of struggle, movement, and survival, this SAW collectible reminds us that fashion can also teach. Douglass was not only a giant in the fight for Black freedom, but also a public supporter of women’s rights, speaking in favor of women’s suffrage at Seneca Falls in 1848. As he said, “Right is of no sex, truth is of no color.”
