What began with adding Pinot D’angiò to my DJ bag expanded into one of the deepest dives I’ve done on a local funk scene. Much ink has been spilled on Italo, but the Napoli funk scene has an equally compelling history.This is one of the funkiest journeys you’ll go on. Coming very soon: the third release on West Hill Music, the new sub-label from Periodica Records dedicated exclusively to productions curated by Mystic Jungle and conceived at West Hill Studio in Napoli, a longstanding creative hub active for more than a decade.The project aims to reclaim and reimagine the language of mid-1980s music, drawing from both American and European New Wave through a personal filter that freely and instinctively blends elements of Italo Disco, Rock and Funk. The two tracks, moving within a dance-not-dance dimension, stand as a manifesto of this sonic synthesis and a further step in defining the aesthetic vision of the producer.On "Chasing Light", the collaboration with Igor Sekulovic continues, with the guitarist also appearing as co-writer of the track, weaving together tense guitars, driving disco-rock bass lines and slapback reggae-style vocals. On the B-side, "Under Pressure" unfolds as a late-night electronic suite: minimal, aseptic and hypnotically repetitive.The 7-inch vinyl is expected to be released around July 13, 2026. We are pleased to announce the second release on West Hill Music, the sub-label curated by Mystic Jungle, founder of Periodica Records, who over the past years has developed a distinctive sonic identity alongside a close circle of collaborators working from his studio located in the hills above Naples.This project also functions as a platform for studio collaborations and features the voice of American singer Roxana, alongside guitar work by Igor Sekulović. The A-side, “Can’t Make You Out”, unfolds with a crepuscular mood and a laid-back, exotic atmosphere shaped by subtle funk-rock influences. It retains a lo-fi, analogue-driven character with nods to Mediterranean musical culture and 1980s synth-pop aesthetics. On the B-side, “Mountain River” takes a more stripped-down approach, built on lean electronic drum programming and a mutant funk structure. Despite the short time between releases, however, Dario di Pace’s third LP, 'Sunset Breaker', has been in gestation for a long while and reflects an arduous journey through studio closures and multiple recording locations. It also shows the stylistic variety that results when a set of songs develops over several years. Despite this difficult journey, Mystic Jungle has produced a rich and multi-colored display of sounds and styles, resulting in his most diverse and adventurous musical narrative thus far. Standout dance tracks like “Secrets” and “Some Lovin'” feature disco beats and body-moving grooves, with searing guitars, sultry saxophones, and layers of loved-up lyrics and call-and-response vocals that add to the magical motion.
