Living with the land as a multigenerational family. Practising and teaching Permaculture and Syntropic Agroforestry
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
We are so grateful to the now 10 thousand of you who follow our family as we share our quirky regenerative life 🤍

PermaDynamics stands for our approach of integrating Permaculture and Syntropic Agroforestry and has since encompassed our permanently dynamic nature. As a business and a family team, we are in a constant flow, our varing interests and skills weaving together.

We hope to pass along our joy for this way of life through the myriad of ways and spaces we share our knowledge and experience.

We thank you for your support and following our content 🤍

🤍

A little history of how our family came to be here 🌍

Our little family of four (Klaus, Ness, Josh and Frida) landed in Aotearoa in 2003, from Bolivia, South America to the community we still live in, in Te Tai Tokerau, Northland.
The trust land we live on was previously a sheep station of degraded compacted steep clay slopes smothered in kikuyu grass.  Over the 20 years we have grown our roots alongside the thousands of trees we've planted. Working together with the wildlife, soil life and the community around us we have grown deep topsoil and an abundant ecosystem capable of supporting a vibrant complexity of life and a rich diversity of food.

Over the last 6 years we've had the joy of including Sean (from here - Aotearoa) and Mati (from France) into our family and business. And more recently over the past two years welcoming the third generation of our family - Tūānuku and Nina - to this beautiful way of life 🤍

We continue to plants trees, teach, create, research, innovate, and share ways to live in reciprocation with our environment, and have fun doing so!

Thank you, thank you for being with us on this journey!

Ngā mihi NUI! 🙏

Love from our family to you 🤍🤍🤍 taken in Permadynamics by @permadynamics

Harvesting seed grown creamy avocados from the food forest that grows in abundance each year. Only 30ish years ago this area was deemed ‘only fit for sheep to graze’ (in other words hard clay soil and steep slopes). With Klaus’s journey learning the art of Syntropic Agroforestry from Ernst Götsch in the 80s, and the decades of experimentation and application of these techniques in Aotearoa, this soil is now constantly increasing in fertility, leaving a legacy of abundance for future generations to feast on.

Syntropic Agroforestry in a nutshell is a language of observation and application of a carefully orchestrated set of site specific techniques to work with plants to unlock the potential of any soil.

Where ever you are in the world, no matter your site conditions come check out our website to join in this regenerative movement and learn how to transform your soils towards its inherent potential of abundance too!

Turn Gorse into Mushrooms! 🍄

........

Gorse is a plant most farmers curse under their breath.

But twenty years ago, Klaus Lotz from @PermaDynamics asked a different question: could it be used as a food source?

The first attempt did not go gracefully. Thorns through the gloves, scratches up the arms, patience wearing thin at the chipper. He cursed the gorse and swore he'd never do it again.

But a month later, the gorse clippings he'd added to a bucket erupted with delicious oyster mushrooms.

It turns out gorse is close to perfect mushroom substrate. Woody fibres give a spongy structure, and because it has no true leaves, the spines carry just enough nitrogen to feed the mycelium without going mouldy. The carbon to nitrogen ratio is ideal.

As the author Frida Keegan (@tree_born) puts it, it's a reminder of one of permaculture's best-known principles: the problem is often the solution."

Frida has written up the full method – harvesting, pasteurising, spawn, buckets – which we published in Issue 10.

You can read the full story online now.

With so many floods occurring last summer, the strongest frost we've had for the last 10 years happen this winter and predictions on this coming summer being super dry and fire prone....we thought we'd do a webinar touching on how best to mitigate these climate extremes through understanding the power of the right vegetation in the right place.

Head over to our Membership page on our website to join our TapRoot Community and hop on this discussion/presentation with us 🤗 (website link in bio) 🌱

See you there 🤗

Despite the strongest frosts they've seen down here, Liz and Wiremu's food forest in the Kaipara is holding up well! Thanks in large to the incredible power of bana grass! Tough as nails, able to grow in such a wide span of temperatures and soils, this plant brings biomass, shelter and incredible root structure to the game. When planted densily like this its a great kikuyu barrier in those cooler zones where, like here, tithonia is all but burnt off by frost.

It's finding these plants that help food forests establish and thrive in these unpredictable times of cold winter or harsh summer that make or break the success of more delicate plants taking hold.

Today's work involved giving these rows a simple comb through, getting the old leaves off to give more light to the trees inside without compromising the emergent shelter they are offering the young trees.

Come spring when the next layer of planting happens they'll get a chop to the ground, returning their incredible abundance to the soil, and giving them a reset to come up strong again into a waist high hedge over summer, strengthening their barricade against kikuyu.

To find such plants for your area check out www.sapp.earth for an incredible and interactive database of knowledge and plants.

🤍❄️🌿

In awe of the attitude and passion Liz holds for this forest and the philosophy of Syntropy 🤍🙌 Grateful to have been a part of bringing this forest into life. by @permadynamics

Who else has woken up to a crunchy morning? ❄️

Strongest frosts we've had in years in the 'winterless north'.

Just goes to shows climate resiliency is not only about gearing for a wamer and warmer climate, but about planning for extremes. Frosts, heat, droughts and floods. Embrasing for unpredictable fluxusations through diversity and strategic, layered, planting.

Maybe a lull in bananas, tamarillos and taro to harvest after this but a bumper crop of berries, apples, pears and stone fruit coming 🤷‍♀️ by @permadynamics

Internship weekend 8 - all about gathering and processing perennial foods and deepening our students knowledge and identification of plants. What soil succession they thrive in and what their functional role could be in a syntropic ecosystem.

And of course lots of sharing stories amongst the harvests and feasting abundantly with deep gratitude to Papatūānuku for growing such a diversity of nutrition. 🤍🤍🤍 by @permadynamics

Feeling very grateful to have Iberê with us for the next month!

Iberê manages two epic syntropic agroforestry farms in Brazil — one centred around cacao, the other coffee — both woven through with an incredible diversity of tropical fruits, trees, and abundance. His work is deeply inspiring, not only in the way he farms, but in how he brings his love of surfing into the landscape too, growing balsa within his systems and shaping stunning handmade surfboards from the timber.

His family's delicious pure cacao @cacautiua (featured in the photos) is devine. Other chocolate doesn't taste the same after trying his!

He also spends time learning and working alongside Ernst Götsch at Ernst's farm in Bahia and his new farm in Sourthern Brazil. He is also a dear friend of Gudrun Götsch.

Klaus had the privilege of working with Ernst back in the 80s, and more recently Frida joined one of Gudrun’s women’s courses in Australia, so it feels very special to have these connections weaving together again here. (Gudrun also syntropically grows and produces the @selvaepaz bars above) 🤤🙏

We’re looking forward to many conversations, shared learning, and a winter full of slash-and-drop, planting, pruning, and all things syntropy.

Mostly, we’re excited to welcome a new friend into the rhythm of the farm for a while, and hopefully one day visit him in his corner of Brazil too. 🌻 by @permadynamics
