Since my father, Christopher Perry Nichols, passed 20 weeks ago, it feels like a good time to commemorate one of the most indelible impressions he left on his hometown: his full-length portrait cameo in the Dallas Morning News mural as a newsboy. While scouring the family archives, I recently discovered this panoramic photograph of the mural my grandfather, Perry Nichols, painted to decorate the lobby of the Dallas Morning News’ Downtown Dallas headquarters. The leather bound frame which previously housed a decorative Western print turned out to be a perfect fit & foil for the photo. In 1949, the DMN mural was completed & installed in the Belo Building when my dad was just 10 years old. The mural was put into storage for some lobby renovations in the 1960’s & reinstalled in the 80’s. The 2nd picture is a family portrait of my dad, grandfather & mother taken at the unveiling ceremony. I’ve also included a vintage photo & a detail of the portrait my father posed for. #texasartist #mural #familyportrait #news #southwest taken in 400 Record by @perrybrooksnichols

Tonight's #pleinair adventure took me to one of my favorite vistas, White Rock Lake's trailhead. As always, it was an inspiring view, the sky didn't disappoint, & everyone was so friendly. I learned a valuable lesson about painting after dark there as the bugs swarmed like crazy on my lights. If you look at the last pics the texture they added to my painting is evident 😅. Luckily, I'd sprayed myself w/ Off so I got very few bites. #landscapepainter #whiterocklake #lake #powerplant taken in White Rock Lake Spillway by @perrybrooksnichols

While I was plein air painting last week, I was approached by a luminous sprite who asked take a picture of me at work. I was surprised to see that she captured multiple perspectives of this particular creature in his natural environment. Thanks so much for the photos, Roxanne! @rox_rox_rox_rox_t_a_m_c 🤩 #pleinairpainter #artistatwork #urbanlandscape #park #dallas taken in Exall Park by @perrybrooksnichols

“A Tauromaquia for the Modern Age” I finally got a chance to see @brentkollock Brent Kollock’s remarkable exhibition of black & white photography at the Latino Cultural Center. I first encountered Brent when he lived in a little house on the edge of SMU’s campus while completing my BFA studies. I had seen his works on display at Gerald Peter’s gallery along with those of our shared painting professor Bill Komodore, but meeting the man himself was a culture shock. I’ll always remember the image of the artist kneeling before intricate Expressionist oil canvases perched on cinder blocks with a smoking cigarette dangling from his mouth in a living room that resembled the splatter/splendor of Lucien Freud’s studio. Now, this was someone devoted to the pursuit & manifestation of an image. Around this time, the Meadows Museum had reopened in their present location with an impressive curation of Goya’s series of etchings - a virtuosic display of technique, composition & visceral perspective. Like the Spanish Master’s series, Brent’s tonal mastery sends the viewer careening into depths of the arena. You’ve got one week left to see the show don’t miss it! #photography #exhibition #artshow #silvergelatin #rodeo taken in Latino Cultural Center by @perrybrooksnichols

Moon Accent, Green/Violet morning clouds, & some Rothko/Diebenkorn-esque cityscapes. As we enter the penumbra of the waning harvest moon, Dallas has been gifted with the blessings of Wakinyah Tanka & the thunderbeings - days of long-awaited rain & clouds, that is. I’ve been buried in receipts working on my late taxes, so posts have been & shall be few/far between for the next week or so. I hope these glimpses into my world bring you joy in the meantime. #fullmoon #nightscape #cityscape #sunrise #clouds by @perrybrooksnichols

My father, Christopher Nichols, passed away just about 6 months ago today & joined his mother-in-law, Thelma Walls, who left us 20 years ago yesterday in the embrace of eternity. This is a picture of my grandmother with her new son-in-law on the day of my parent’s wedding which took place at my childhood home on Vanderbilt Ave. They were about as opposite as two characters could be, yet they got along famously. #motherinlaw #grandmother #father #vintage #weddingphotography taken in Lakewood / Old East Dallas by @perrybrooksnichols

“Sun Painting No.1 - The Temptation Of Quetzalcoatl” cyanotype on Arches Hot Press w/c paper - 9” x 13-1/2” (13” x 17” framed) - In celebration of the Fall Equinox & upcoming Native American Day, I reframed my favorite cyanotype from my studies in Charlie Debus’ Alternative Photography class. Among the other works in the “Sun Paintings” series, the negatives were created by painting & collaging translucent objects such as perforated sprocket film strips on transparent surfaces before exposing the ferricyanide treated paper to sunlight. Around this time in my life, I developed a fascination w/ the ancestral wisdom of Pre-Columbian Mexico & experienced the gift of attending Equinox dances & ceremonies hosted by Yaqui-Toltec nagual elder @tata.kachora @tatacachora. The central character in Toltec mythology, Quetzalcoatl aka The Feathered Serpent, ruled peacefully over the culturally rich city of Tollan in Central Mexico. Tezcatlipoca, the jaguar wizard, & Huitzilopochtli, the mischevious dwarf, acting as agents of chaos conspired to overthrow Quetzalcoatl by offering him a ceremonial drink spiked w/ pulque. This “Temptation” was the first in a chain of events which led to the downfall & eventual collapse of the Toltec empire. The gilded border of this salvaged frame brings out the aged/off-white highlights & the neutral mat accents tonal values of the print, plus there’s more space around the edges of the image than the previous setting. May your Fall be graceful! #cyanotype #print #frame #artwork #fall taken in Tula Tamaulipas "Pueblo Mágico" by @perrybrooksnichols
