Today is International Day of Rural Women, and 2026 is also the UN International Year of the Woman Farmer.

Globally, women make up close to 40% of the agricultural workforce, according to the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO). Yet they own only around 15% of agricultural land and often have less access to credit, markets and decision-making. Until 1994 Australian women were not permitted to list "farmer" as their legal occupation! Thankfully we've made a lot of progress since 1994 and women are visible owners, managers and workers in Australian rural and communities.

Through our projects, the Sustainable Ag Team at Perth NRM and RegenWA are proud to work with resilient, resourceful rural woman and farmers every day. This photo features members of our Sustainable Ag team:

We are very grateful to be the recipients of donations made in the WildArt Bird Photography Awards (@wildartbpa)!

With the generous donations Perth NRM is launching an exciting new initiative to grow Cockatoo Cafés across Perth, to provide essential food for endangered cockatoos.

Our first round of Cockatoo Cafe Expressions of Interest will open soon!

We’re teaming up with @trilliontrees_au to create ready-to-go packs of Hakeas and Banksias, carefully selected for small, medium and large spaces.

There’ll be a suitable size for everyone to apply, even schools!

Commencing with thanks to generous donations from WildArt, these seedling packs will be significantly subsidised, making it easier and more affordable to create a Cockatoo Café.

☀️ Welcome to Kambarang - Known as the Season of Birth, or the Second Spring!

Kambarang (October – December) brings the return of warmer weather and longer, drier days. Orchids, kangaroo paws, and banksias are in bloom. Reptiles wake from hibernation and search for the warmth of the sun, and be careful as Koolbaries (magpies) will swoop to protect their nesting young.

We share this information respectfully, acknowledging Noongar people as the knowledge holders of the seasonal calendar and the cultural knowledge shared through publicly available sources.
