The moment Tambi walked out into his new home 🥹

This adorable young giraffe has blown us all away with how quickly he’s settled in after his big cross-country road trip.

He’s joined herd mates Kitoto, Ellie and Zahara in the habitat and has already been delighting visitors!

Tambi’s here! 🎉

We’re excited to let you know young male giraffe Tambi has arrived safely at his new home with us at Perth Zoo today.

Tambi travelled more than 3,300km by road across the Nullarbor with a team of expert carers from Melbourne Zoo. We’re told he handled the cross-country trip like a champ thanks to all the preparations and training.

It’s been a loooong journey for this one-year-old giraffe, so for now our teams are focused on letting him rest and settle in at his own pace.

In the coming days, we hope to introduce him to his new female herd mates Kitoto, Ellie and Zahara 🧡

As always, we’re working on ‘animal time’ so we don’t know exactly when you might be able to come and see him, but we’ll keep you updated!

Halloween-themed enrichment is the best kind of enrichment!

We scored our animals Halloween enrichment techniques - extra points given for creativity🤣🎃

But in all seriousness, enrichment like this is a super important part of our animal’s daily lives. It provides them with an ever-changing habitat to ensure no two days are ever the same!

Our dedicated keepers and volunteer Docents put a lot of thought and creativity into species-specific activities that encourage our animals to use their natural instincts or practice problem solving skills like they would in the wild.

At this time of year, it’s fun to add a spooky twist! 👻

We are SO lucky to have such an incredible bunch of vet nurses working tirelessly behind the scenes in our Vet Hospital.

Our nurses play a key role in the health and wellbeing the animals that call our Zoo home, plus the hundreds of wild animals that come in for lifesaving care every year.

We see more than 350 wild black cockatoos, many of which need ongoing hospitalisation. And it’s thanks to our vet nurses that we’re able to support these beautiful endangered wild birds and give them the best chance to be re-released.

It’s a vocation where no two days are the same, and our vet nurses really are the ultimate jack of all trades.

They’re anaesthetic monitors, surgical assistants, scrub nurses, infection control officers, administrators, nutritionists, teachers and so much more.

And what makes this even more impressive? They’re always prepared for any kind of animal, whether its furry, scaly or feathery.

Indigenous Desert land management meets science-backed captive care at @perthzoo.

Today, visiting Indigenous Desert Rangers stepped behind the scenes for a powerful knowledge exchange with leading Perth Zoo conservationists.

From exploring genetic tracking protecting vulnerable quokka species with Stephen Catwell to meeting desert-dwelling bilbies in the Nocturnal House, witnessing world-first breeding programs for endangered WA species like the numbat; to learning about international ranger programs with @painteddogconservationinc, teams shared vital insights on halting extinction and safeguarding Australia’s most vulnerable wildlife.

Friends, today we said a very sad goodbye to our beloved Sumatran Orangutan, Puteri.

At 56-years-old, Puteri was well into her twilight years and was actually one of the world's oldest Sumatran Orangutans in human care.

Over the past years, her keepers and veterinary team have been supporting her as she aged.

Thanks to her intelligence and strong bonds with her carers, Puteri willingly participated in her own healthcare, from temperature checks and skincare treatments and even most recently, voluntary blood draws.

In recent days, it became clear that despite the best care possible, Puteri wasn’t her usual self and her health was declining. The best decision for her welfare was to say goodbye 🧡

Puteri, or Puti as she’s affectionately known, will be greatly missed but her legacy is certainly one to be celebrated.

Tonight under the lights, two worlds of conservation unite! ✨ We are excited to bring together visiting Indigenous Women Rangers from the Desert and @perthzoo this week for a special leadership and cultural exchange.

Members of the alliance named a 2026 Finalist for Prince William’s @earthshotprize, these incredible women are leading the charge in protecting Australian desert ecosystems, combining ancient Traditional Ecological Knowledge with modern land management.

Tonight, they explored the ZooLights festival, admiring glowing lanterns of the species Perth Zoo works to protect, including WA’s emblem the numbat and black cockatoos.
