"Niche": few I know are confident in pronouncing this if written, or immediately understanding what they've heard if spoken to them.

"Columbarium": in this case, the unheated base of a church bell tower lined with purpose-built wooden fixtures.

When speaking to others, I say, "I visited my mother's grave"-- an unsatisfactory if effective shortcut to shared comprehension.

She is gone; I have been to the location that remains.

I do not understand this place relative to her, inside yet cold as winter night, near yet so far from the garden she tended on the other side of the structure's stone wall.

So very far.

The cold brass plate transfixes and holds true, the decades of love and loss, the irrefutable dates.

She died on my birthday.

She will always have died on my birthday.

Heartsbalm, to return to where we were young together, and hopeful. How grateful I am for this setting of my early years, the granite and the sky; how these mountains hold me, still. by @pertinux

The First Morning.

A pause.

Because if you stop here, you can pretend she is still here, downstairs, waiting for you.
