🇹🇷 A Turkish court has overruled the democratic choice made by CHP delegates at the party’s 2023 Congress, suspending the elected leadership of Türkiye’s main opposition party.

When courts are used to reshape political competition, democracy and pluralism are under attack.

We stand in solidarity with the democratically elected CHP leadership and all those defending democracy, rule of law and political freedom in Türkiye.

Europe cannot stay silent.

Madrid belongs to its people, not to Mar-a-Lago.

While Madrid’s citizens face rising rents and pressure on public healthcare, Regional President Isabel Díaz Ayuso (PP) seems more interested in being Donald Trump’s biggest fan than in governing.

In this heated intervention, @mar_espinar, PSOE spokesperson in the Madrid Assembly (@psoemadrid ), calls out the hypocrisy:

👉 Frequent PR trips to the United States while local problems remain unresolved.
👉 Aligning with MAGA-style rhetoric that often targets the very culture she claims to defend.
👉 Chasing international headlines instead of focusing on the daily realities of Madrid’s residents.

Cities and regions are part of the global conversation
But their voice should stand for democracy, peace and the people they serve... not for those who undermine them. taken in Madrid, Spain by @pes_cor

We stand in solidarity with the survivors of the Epstein case.

Their courage demands justice and accountability.

As a progressive political group, we fight for a society where power is never used to harm the most vulnerable ones. Every victim’s voice must be heard, protected, and taken seriously.

No one should be silenced. No one should be left behind.

Once a local leader, always a local leader, @antoniocosta.euco❤️

Today, at the opening of #EURegionsWeek, António Costa, President of the @eucouncil (and former Mayor of Lisbon), spoke out about the housing crisis and the growing frustration of citizens who can no longer afford a place to live.

Cities and regions are on the front line of this crisis. But its scale demands action at every level: the EU can and must lend a hand.

That starts with making housing a priority in the next EU budget. #MFF

Housing is a basic right, not a luxury. ‼️

Europe is going through a housing crisis.
So should we put stricter limits on Airbnb and other short-term rentals? 🏠

Economist and creator @pietrovaletto.eu put the question to @annehidalgo, former Mayor of Paris, when we met in Athens for Democracy at its Roots.

Her answer: Yes ! And cities cannot do it alone.

With affordable housing under pressure across Europe, local, national and European authorities need to work together and deliver results people can actually feel.

Because democracy is also about something very basic: being able to afford to live in the place you call home.

Would tighter rules on Airbnb make a difference in your city? 👇

Suicide rates are not the same everywhere in the EU and national averages can hide major regional differences.

Our map shows the 2023 picture across EU regions, from some of the lowest rates in southern Europe to much higher rates in parts of central, northern and eastern Europe.

These differences matter because prevention is not only about awareness. Access to support matters too and that access can depend on where you live.

Strong local mental health services, early support and prevention policies can make a difference.

And sometimes, so can a conversation.

If you’re struggling, talk to someone you trust and seek support.

Prevention starts with making sure help is there when people need it.

Maricarmen was 87. She had lived in her home in Madrid for 70 years.

After years of fighting to stay there, she was evicted. She died two weeks later, before she could return home.

Her story is a brutal reminder that the housing crisis is not about numbers. It is about people, their homes and their right to live in dignity.

In the Madrid Assembly, @psoemadrid spokesperson @mar_espinar had a clear message: we can choose to protect vulnerable tenants, stop unfair rent increases and stand up to vulture funds.

Because homes should give people security, not become another asset to squeeze for profit.

Housing is a right. And we will keep fighting for it.

____

Y seguiremos luchando por él. taken in Madrid, Spain by @pes_cor

📢 21 European capitals, one message: Hands off cohesion! ❌

Three weeks ago during her yearly #SOTEU speech, European Commission’s President Von der Leyen made some pretty big promises about the EU investing in its #regions.

Sounds great, right? 👀

Well, mayors and local leaders know the difference between a speech and a budget. ❌

As @josko_klisovic 🇭🇷 says: her actions don’t match her words.

If the Commission gives into the pressure to cut “several hundred billion euros” from the 2028-2034 EU budget,
our cities and regions would pay the price.

💌 Today, mayors of major European capitals just told the Irish Presidency that a cut means “a gap between ambition and delivery” for housing, transport, competitiveness and the climate transition.

Cities deliver. Regions delivery. But to do so, they need a strong, predictable cohesion policy, not empty promises, and not austerity by another name.

Another line has been crossed in Germany.

For the first time since WWII, a politician from a far-right party has been elected President of a German state parliament.

Tobias Rausch of the AfD is now President of the Saxony-Anhalt Parliament.

He was elected with 48 votes, nine more than the AfD’s 39 seats. The BSW, which holds five seats, had announced it would back him. With the ballot secret, at least four additional votes must therefore have come from other groups.

And he is not the only one.

Hans-Thomas Tillschneider (AfD) was also elected Vice-President of the parliament.

Saxony-Anhalt’s domestic intelligence service considers him one of the defining figures of the regional AfD, which it officially classifies as right-wing extremist.

Tillschneider was also a leading figure in Der Flügel (“The Wing”), the AfD’s former ultranationalist faction. Germany’s federal domestic intelligence agency classified the group as right-wing extremist and placed it under surveillance before it formally dissolved in 2020.

This comes just one month after the AfD won 43.8% in Saxony-Anhalt, more than doubling its 2021 result.

First the election victory.
Now one of the state’s highest institutions.

The normalisation of the far right is not an abstract threat.
It is happening.
And every democrat should be paying attention. taken in Saxony-Anhalt by @pes_cor

🏠 Today is #WorldHabitatDay, with this year’s theme of “Adequate Housing for All”. In Europe, we’re nowhere near it. ⚠️

Across Europe, people are being priced out and pushed out of their own neighbourhoods. This map shows the housing cost overburden rate: the share of people living in households that spend more than 40% of their disposable income on housing.

What does that mean? For millions of people, rent, mortgage interest, energy bills and upkeep swallow almost half their income, leaving 60% or less for food, transport, childcare and everything else. 💸

📍 Greece has the highest share in Europe, with around 1 in 4 people overburdened on average. In some regions, like Peloponnese and Central and Eastern Macedonia, it’s 1 in 3.
📍 Denmark is at roughly 20%, depending on the region. Even in a wealthy country, housing costs are crushing 1 in 5 households.
📍 Capital regions are struggling most. Take Madrid, where decades of political inaction by the region’s conservative leadership have created the worst situation in all of Spain. 🇪🇸

(📝 France: regional data isn’t available, so the map shows the national average of 6.4%.)

And this only counts people who still have a home. It doesn’t count those already priced out, forced out, or left without one. 💔

This is what happens when homes are treated as assets instead of a basic need. Rising rents, unregulated short-term lets and real estate speculation are driving people out.

The housing crisis is not an accident. It’s a political choice, and we can choose differently.

We need urgent action at every level: European, national, regional and local. Affordable, decent housing for everyone. ✊🌹

You shouldn’t have to leave the neighbourhood where you were born, grew up or built your life because you can no longer afford to live there.

But that is exactly what is happening in too many of our cities.

People are being priced out of their own communities while homes become assets for speculation and short-term profit.

In Barcelona, Mayor Jaume Collboni is choosing to push back.

🏠 Rent regulation helped bring the average price of new rental contracts down 9% year-on-year in its first year.

🏙️ And by November 2028, Barcelona plans to end around 10,000 tourist-flat licences and return those homes to residential use.

Because housing policy isn’t just about bringing prices down.

It’s about the right to stay.

Close to your family. Your friends. Your work. Your community.

A neighbourhood should be a place to live, not an investment opportunity for the highest bidder.

Homes are for living in. Cities are for the people who live in them.

#HousingForAll

At 87, Maricarmen has just been evicted from the Madrid 🇪🇸home where she lived for 71 years after her rent was raised beyond what her €1,350 pension could afford. 💔

Despite thousands of protestors mobilising in support of #Maricarmen, the local authorities have failed to protect her. PSOE’s @sanchezcastejon has now promised that the government will act and calls on parliamentary groups across the political spectrum to approve an urgent decree on housing. 👏

Because solving the rampant housing crisis should not be a niche partisan interest. We urgently need everyone on board to make our cities livable again.

Maricarmen’s story shows what happens when homes are treated as investment assets rather than places to live.

It’s time to truly make housing a right, not a playground for speculation.

The EU’s first-ever Affordable Housing Act is a start. But Europe needs much bigger and bolder action to build affordable homes, protect tenants and put people before profit.
