A breathwork group was the first time that I experienced my body and self as something larger than my contracted day to day experience.

Waking up with chronic illness, a sore body, headaches and just trying to survive university limited my vision for my life to about two weeks. It was so hard to see myself in any future, much less one that inspired me beyond survival.

So when halfway through that breathwork session I was faced with a dark orb floating in my view I felt the familiar weight of my hurting body – the one that struggled every day with blood sugar crashes and brain fog. And then my perspective zoomed out far enough to show me an even larger expanse of space surrounding this sad hurting blackness.

It was a rich, golden red and orange molten warmth. I felt myself being held by something larger that was both my Self and also something greater.

This breathwork session gave me a glimpse, a direct experience and hope that there was something more than what I experienced daily.

While that session gave me a taste, it has been the development of a breathwork practice that has helped me develop a deeper relationship with my own body while also seeing how I am never separate from that molten, powerful warmth.

Almost daily I discover that I've forgotten that connection and pausing and taking a slow breath I rediscover that it has never left and is still with me. Sometimes it takes me a week to realize that I've forgotten this connection and yet with the simple practice of breath I remember it again.

This understanding of returning has been the teaching I've found in many practices, books and from many different teachers. Sometimes the contraction is so tight my mind won't unclench and then it takes the slow patience of a trusted facilitator to guide me along my way.

We all contain multitudes, I've seen it in so many people. Beautiful, wise, young, scared, powerful multitudes yearning to ask, share or teach something to us. If you're interested in using breathwork to connect to your body, slow down your mind and experience the possibility of different futures get in touch and let's get you breathing!

Excerpts from a breathwork journey:

A kind voice,
"You could be an artist."

My internal response is instant,
"I can't be that."

It's accompanied by a vertical rod through my stomach as I lay there breathing.

"You/I would lose your secure home and the ability to support yourself - even though you'd be a great artist."

"Is this actually a fear that I'll fail as an artist?"

Where there is a "should" or "have-to" often reveals a block or a belief.

The individualism and perfectionism of wht suprem cy culture tells us if you can't do it big and shiny immediately you shouldn't try it at all.

So often there is a block behind the block that we think we see. For me, behind "I can't be an artist" is the belief that my first try must be perfect.

Hearing other people's experiences and stories helps us recognize and identify our own beliefs and biases. Coming together as community seeking healing, relief and transformation helps us see ourselves in other people's experiences, challenges and also dreams.

Many times I've had insights through listening to others share from their own experience, things that I haven't yet been able to see in myself or thought was my own unique failing.

When we start to say our assumptions and beliefs aloud, the ones that feel so obvious they could never be challenged, we start to realize the potential for dislodging and re-imagining our being in this world.

Breathwork is a powerful tool for unearthing and hearing from our own wisdom the potential and beauty that lies in our futures.

Join me Thursday August 27th for group breathwork in south osborne meeting ourselves where we're at and inviting the breath in.

2: Drawing of a melting cake with the words "what beliefs are running in the background? where are they taking you?
3: A drawing of a heron-like creature standing on a house. Text - "Where do you stand?"

Thrilled to be hosting the
"Breathwork and Intuitive Visioning Workshop" again with @holly.alexandra.of.yew from @yewtopiawpg
The feedback we got from the first time around was really magical. The power of using the breath to prep the mind and body to move into a state of visualization and intuition was palpable. When you think of intuition as a muscle that we all have and that benefits from our attention and activation it makes sense that generating a shift away from our daily thinking states towards one that is imaginative and receptive would result in curiosities and insights.
If you're interested in learning about and experiencing intuition, breathwork or what it feels like to be in a room of people all with the intention of opening to their own inner wisdom, come join us!
Send me a dm or click the link in my bio for more information and for tickets!
Look forward to seeing you there :) by @pete_maws

The saxophone adventure Part 1

When I was in grade 6 my school hired a band teacher and we started a band. Everyone chose instruments that they wanted to play and many of my friends showed up with shiny new rentals, crisp out of their cases. I'm not really sure how I ended up with the trumpet. One version of the story might be that I thought the trumpet was the coolest thing ever. Another version of the story might be that we couldn't afford a rental instrument so I got to choose from the options we had at home. It just so happened that we already had a trumpet that my dad had picked up over the years. It was really banged up and the bell was more flat than curved but luckily(?) it seemed to play Smoke on the Water just fine.

Throughout my life seeing things from many perspectives has both benefited me and kept me stuck. It has meant that I am able to use and be relatively satisfied with the things in front of me.

Convincing myself that what I have is more than enough even when it clearly contradicts my deeper dreams and desires has come at the cost of my self-confidence. Talking myself out of my dreams erodes the confidence that I have in myself to listen to my heart and creative drives.

So last summer I was looking for ways to bring more creativity and music into my life again and was reminded by a friend how affordable renting an instrument can be.

Here's how my habitual logic played out.
1. I should learn to play an instrument I already have experience with – piano, trumpet or euphonium.
2. Well, practically a euphonium is much too big and probably expensive so that got crossed off.
3. So, two options left – piano and trumpet.
4. Well, I need to make as small a disturbance in other people's lives as possible and I live with roommates so the trumpet will definitely be a nuisance.
5. Therefore I should rent a piano and play only with headphones on.

I give a lot of credit to my breathwork practice for what came next. I noticed the pattern of talking myself down from what I was dreaming of.

Having realized this pattern I resolved to go rent a sax even for a few months just to disrupt this internal belief.

“In order to trust your vibes, you have to first be able to sense them—and to do this, you must quiet your mind.”
― Sonia Choquette

Coming up next week is a very special event. A collaboration between myself and Holly @holly.alexandra.of.yew from @yewtopiawpg to bring you a breathwork and intuitive visioning journey. Breathwork is a powerful tool for shifting and accessing non-ordinary states of consciousness. I often have a sense that I should make one choice or another and if I can notice this in time I can get quiet and see what information might be arising. Intuition is a muscle that we can all strengthen and a tool we can use in our daily lives. Breathwork can be a portal into a quieter state of being that provides access to energy and presence from which we can more easily explore our inner world. After a breathwork practice led by Peter, Holly will facilitate an intuitive visioning journey. We'll use drawing and writing as a way to record in sketches and jot notes our experiences along the way. At the end of the session we'll reflect on what arose and what it might tell us about what's alive or present in our lives and how to make space for what's ready to move forward. No art, breathwork or writing experience required!

Saturday May 30th from 7-10pm at Spiral Domain at 421 Mulvey Ave.

Slide 1: A smiling photo of Peter in a red sweater against a bright yellow wall.

Slide 2: A drawing by Peter of two sides of a chasm with a multitude of colors, shapes and textures. Text reads "I breathe for internal coherence and to meet the depths of my inner wisdom."

Slide 3: Event poster reads:
Saturday May 30th 7-10pm | 421 Mulvey Ave. | doors at 6:45pm | sliding scale $30-$75 | Tea, snacks and materials supplied.

"I know how to feel better but I don't deserve it."

I've learned many practices and techniques over the last number of years as I've navigated illness, recovery, and seizures. All while also trying to make sense of what the purpose and meaning of this life could be. It isn't enough for me to just not feel chronically tired or to stop having seizures.

I mean that's great but really isn't enough for me. I want to feel free, I want to feel alive.

When I started doing breathwork I was able to understand and experience this freedom and aliveness through my body rather than as something I was seeking outside of myself.

Learning these consciousness expanding practices are powerful and life changing. Something that I forget and I see others also losing connection to is the knowing that they deserve to feel more alive and free. I routinely need confirmation that I actually deserve to feel more powerful, more free, and more gentle.

Having space held for me in breathwork has provided this over and over. Under systems of oppression it isn't always accessible but it is something that we deserve and remembering this more often can mobilize us to participate in the liberation our world so deeply needs.

1: Photo of a softly smiling Peter sitting in front of house plants wearing a dark t-shirt with a diamond pattern.

2: A cropped black and white image of a drawing (made by Peter) of the scaly skull of a creature with a long tongue and wide open mouth. Text reading "I often feel grey and forget"

3: The same drawing in full color with a yellow background and text reading "You deserve to feel more alive"

4: A photo of Peter standing in a calm lake with arms spread wide and a clear blue sky overhead. Pink text reads, "breathwork helps me feel like this more often".

5: A poster for the upcoming Group Breathwork events on Monday May 18th and Wednesday June 17th. A drawing by Peter with many colors, shapes and some creatures is in the center of the poster. Doors @ 6:45pm. Event runs from 7-9pm at 421 Mulvey ave. in south osborne. Tickets are $30-50 and sliding scale tickets are also available.

You are already Whole.
======================
a dedication to my aliveness
the wedge of contradiction is no longer lodged inside me
Society's dissonance now returns to the lap of its culture
My body does not carry the burden of its resolution
I am aligned and whole as I am.
As much as I bend to the demands of culture, I fracture my own heart and soul.
Numbing the pain of this chasm between human expression and demands of manufactured performance comes at the cost of my essential creative being.
I take back my wholeness standing firm in my own heart.
------------------------------------------

When we acknowledge our primary wholeness we no longer need to defend the structures of inequity and can instead ask what alignment and what repair can heal the violence of our participation.

Breathwork has given me direct experience of this fullness and the beauty and freedom of living in alignment wherever I can recognize it.

This month I'm celebrating a birthday and we've got three breathwork workshops coming up at Spiral Studio.

I'll be facilitating group breathwork sessions on Wednesday April 8th at 7pm, Thursday April 30 that 7pm, and on Saturday April 11th at 2pm Shay and I will be co-facilitating together. You can check out their profile for more about them. We've worked together before and I'm really looking forward to doing it again!

At a time when the world feels like its constricting around us breathwork provides a chance to experience the freedom and power that resides in the body. The theme that came through last session from participants was a feeling of taking back agency over the sensations and experience of being in their body. A beautiful feeling of self-empowerment.

I hope you can join us!

When good things arrive, where do you feel them in your body? Where does goodness soak into you? It’s pretty easy to find the places where difficulty and pain land, my stomach, foggy brain etc. There is also so much goodness in my life and how do I make space for that to land? It takes longer pauses and more intention to say, ok, I’ll let this joy weave itself into my body, I won’t push on and past what could be life giving. I’m finding the simplest practices are also some of the more difficult and yet rewarding ones.

Sitting down to draw in goodness and making space to breathe it in, with slow long breaths and deeper practices.

If you’re ready for a container to make space for grief and joy in the full was of your body I invite you to join an upcoming Breathwork group journey. March 18th and April 8th are the next times I’ll be facilitating workshops! Send me a dm or find the link in my bio to reserve your spot :) by @pete_maws

I've been thinking a lot about purpose and meaning. How do we discover for ourselves what gives our life meaning?

Many of the models I received growing up didn't provide direct experience of this wisdom and were rather a “trust us, we know” sort of model. Meaning was inherited or implied and my purpose seemed to be caged in by the duty to become a contributing member of society.

I have a memory from when I was very young and baffled by the apparent lack of other people's confusion. My own formulation of life became a bonus round in a video game when you enter a cavern and jump around collecting as many coins as you can until the screen pushes you across and you return back to the “real” game. Looking back, it's interesting that I viewed the “real” game as the place I came from and the place I returned to. An exploration for another time.

Recently I realized that though this had helped sort things out at the time, it stopped being useful quite a long time ago. What happens when you get tired of jumping around? What happens when the coins lose their shine or your arms get full? Was life just a waiting game until the side-scrolling screen pushed me back into the “real game”.

As I reflect on what I've gained from my breathwork practice, I see how it has provided me with a direct experience of meaning and purpose that I couldn't find anywhere else. Sure I've had insights and experiences that pointed me in the right direction. However, there's something so powerful when you can connect those insights and intuitions directly to a felt sense in the body. Trying to escape my body didn't work and when I stopped drinking I found I really had to align my energy with where I wanted to go. And this requires knowing something about your own desire and direction.

The practice of breathwork has helped me bridge the gap between the wisdom of my body and the tool of my thinking mind in order to develop more clarity about what makes me feel alive. Recovering from substance use requires a realignment towards things that truly light you up. Breathwork continues to help me find my own way towards purpose. I'd love to support you on your path, send me a message or join a group! by @pete_maws

There are many days when my head feels like this, so many ideas, curiosities, loops and shapes. It can be overwhelming, not because they are anxious, or uninteresting but because there are simply too many.

Too many things connecting at once, too much sensory input from my environment and a general diffusion of my attention and energy.

I love drawing for the way that some of these ideas and feelings can be externalized. Once a feeling finds its own manifestation in the world (art, writing, through the voice) it feels like something I can relate to, meet as a partial process that continues to play out in me while also being something I can more easily recognize. Walking past this drawing in my room I ask, how's my head doing? How many colors are there today?

The other thing that I've learned through recovery from substance use is that I really benefit from creating capacity for more internal space for these "too much" experiences and to allow them to wash over me without requiring all my attention. When my body feels spacious rather than contracted I become an ecosystem rather than a petri-dish.

When my head feels like this drawing looks, breathwork brings relief. It settles the waves of my mind, expanding my internal experience beyond my linear thought patterns. I feel larger, softer and clearer. I can then know I contain multitudes and that they will continue to percolate even if I don't create a detailed inventory of them all.

When my head feels over run I turn to creating (I'm often over-consuming information "entertainment" etc.), breathwork and taking existential advice from my cats.

Group Breathwork dates are coming up February 19th, March 18th and April 8th. Link in bio to reserve your spot or send me a DM for more info. by @pete_maws

Are you an artist, in a creative or design discipline, healing practitioner, therapist, or run group classes?

I’m looking for someone to join my space here in South Osborne. A beautiful view overlooking the river, two separate office/studio rooms in addition to the large group/event space. Great access to the bike path along the river, bus routes, lots of parking, and the chance to make it your own! by @pete_maws

Coming up this winter are three different dates to come join another group breathwork workshop.

Breathwork has been a foundational tool for my growth and navigation through living with Multiple Scleroris, a seizure disorder and recovery from substance use. I really can't imagine moving through so much uncertainty and change without breathwork. Breathwork practice has given me such powerful direct experiences of the greatness of being, an understanding that I am always so much more than the immediacy of my present experience. And that this reality is always passing away. When my perspective contracts through withdrawals or a sudden onset of symptoms it can be incredibly difficult to imagine anything else beyond that in my life. Breathwork continues to connect me to feelings in my body of expansiveness and presence that I have felt or that I will again feel in my future. A practice of experiencing hope, however small a sliver it may be, sometimes is all I need to get through to something greater.

How do we learn to trust our bodies and minds again when we've learned for many reasons that it's often safer or more comfortable to escape? What do we desire for our own lives when we disentangle from the expectations of society and even from our friends and family? If you're looking for a practice to feel a little more presence in your body, to find insight from a different perspective or to begin a journey seeking relief from stress and anxiety join us for one of these upcoming sessions.

If you're seeking deeper insight and clarity breathwork is a modality that ushers in an experience of expansiveness that I'm surprised by again and again.

Let me know if you have any questions or want to hear more about how breathwork can support living with chronic illness or taking steps towards recovery - however that may look for you.

Look forward to seeing you at a workshop soon!
