my most important type of shot ⬇️

DJ shots are important, also the wide shots and the stages. But the most important shots for me are always the close-ups from the people, the emotions in their faces. This is what gives the aftermovie real feeling and makes the viewer feel something.

And I always try to keep a bit of time for new things. Like around 5%-7% of the time I just try something I didn’t do last time.

Because I realized I’m only really happy with a new film when I try something new(even if it’s just a tiny shift). Otherwise it feels always the same for me and thats exhausting.

My main focus 🎥⬇️

1. shooting bride and groom isn’t my main focus, i rather focus on guests since it’s most of the time more important for the couple to see how the guests were feeling throughout the day.

It’s also nice to see 20 years later all the people who were there.

The reactions, the little moments and the interactions between the guests are things you might not even notice on the wedding day itself.

2. little pieces like the presents, snippets of the speeches, the decorations and the rooms overall are also easy forgotten over time, i think it’s the second most important thing.

These little details also help to bring back the atmosphere of the day years later.

3. bride and groom, here you can focus on the two most important people, since it’s also nice for them to see the self’s years later. but i wouldn’t show them more then 20-30% of the film.

What is most important for you to capture on a wedding day ?

fresh gear for event videographers ⬇️

1. Photochromic sunglasses - when it gets dark, they get lighter, and when it gets sunny, they get darker automatically. You can still see your screen.

2. One lens that covers wide and narrow - 24-70mm or even wider.

3. No external audio recorder - use mics that record directly into the camera. Ideally, two of them. Less extra gear, more lightweight, more chill.

4. Energy bars - quick snack, time is money.

5. One prime lens with great stabilization - handheld footage on a lens with really good stabilization looks beautiful compared to a lens with poor stabilization.

6. A small, non-annoying bag - something that can carry a little extra gear like lens filters, batteries, SD cards, or an additional lens. Not too big or obvious. (I still use the typical Eastpak bag haha.)

7. Functional clothing with lots of pockets and zippers - a big one, but I still don’t use it enough. Having lots of pockets where everything has its place is just a game changer.

8. More Extra batteries - you can never have enough.

9. A second person - having more than two hands is always better. Self-explanatory.

10. A zoom lens with 135mm or more - if you need quick coverage of people in close-up, you can stay in one position and capture so many shots in just one minute.

My go to tools for shooting events 🎥👇🏻

Handheld movement is my number one. It gives me the most flexibility. I can adapt to the situation instantly, switch between different shot sizes and just move fast. It brings action, dynamics and explosiveness to the visuals.

Second is my go to gimbal. It gives everything a more high quality look. Especially wide crowd shots that can feel overloaded with information get the stability and calm they need. You can also do cool speed ramps or hyperlapses and it just has more of a high end character.

Tripod is mainly for interviews. It gives the whole film a certain calmness. Perfect for small pauses in between when you structure aftermovies in chapters and let people breathe for a second. The focus is on strong composition and making the frame interesting without needing movement.

Drone shots are mostly for establishing. Sometimes other people handle the drone because I simply do not have the time. When I fly myself I use it to show the stages from above and the full festival or club area. Mainly to show the scale and size.

And sometimes I just put the camera on the ground. If I do not have a tripod with me it still gives me a stable image and a very interesting low angle perspective. A stable shot often feels high quality anyway and the viewer cannot tell if the camera was on a 3000 euro tripod or just on the floor. So use that.

My most important lens ⬇️

The wide shots with a 14mm bring a lot of energy into the drop.

The drone shots give you a nice perspective, so you get a real feeling for the aerial look of the event or festival.

But my favorite lens will always be the Nifty 50.
It has such a beautiful optic, especially the Sony 50mm f1.8.

I love the shallow depth of field.
I love how lightweight it is.

And it is also not so scary to use, because it is so light that it almost never gets damaged.
Compared to heavier lenses.

And even if it happens, it is cheap to replace.

What is your preferred lens? Write it in the comments.
