MEXICO CITY I Closing Next Week

“Once Upon a Field”
On view through August 15, 2026

Peter Uka’s work, inspired by his own son, transforms a real person into an imaginative vision centered on football as an extension of play, identity, and self-expression. The child’s movement across the pitch becomes a choreography, where football, style, performance, and the body converge, turning the field into a stage for athleticism and self-fashioning.

El movimiento del niño sobre la cancha se convierte en una coreografía donde convergen el fútbol, el estilo, la actuación y el cuerpo, transformando el campo en un escenario para el atletismo y la construcción de la propia identidad.

“I tap into memories a lot. I can sit here and visualise the entirety of what I want to work on in my head based on a fragment of a memory. Sometimes a conversation will also deliver the initial image.”

I met Nigerian artist Peter Uka @peter_uka in his studio earlier this month and spoke with him about his work, a perhaps overheated art market, terrible immersive experiences and his record collection. A project by Mariane Ibrahim in collaboration with Gallery FUMI

April 22 – May 3, 2025

Peter Uka’s work, included in Ad Libitum, reflect contemplations on culture through the lens of memory and nostalgia. A Nigerian-born artist based in Cologne, he blends recollections from his 1970s upbringing in Benue, Nigeria, with contemporary elements, creating layered, emotionally resonant works. His paintings feature imagined and composite figures, incorporating historical references, personal memories, and modern influences. His new work reflects themes of interrupted conversations, memory fragmentation, and the passage of time. Through vibrant compositions and expressive gestures, Uka offers a visual meditation on how culture and memory are preserved and transformed.

Last year I visited artist @peter_uka a few times with my camera in his studio while he was preparing his solo exhibition in Paris and finalizing the last paintings before I finally went to Paris for the first time to visit his exhibition. I thought a year later it was time to share this snapshot. Shot with a #Contax645 and a #kodakportra . Thank you for your time and friendship, Peter. ➡️ Peter Uka: Painting as Homemaking

Join @peter_uka at K21 on November 5 from 6.30 pm on for a reflection on the medium of painting as a means of storytelling and revival!

Deeply informed by memories of his childhood, his almost life-size depictions appear as visual diaries of Black life in Nigeria. Marked with pride and nostalgia, his figurative scenes in vibrant colors capture the local daily life and societal changes of the 1970s, while rendering visible the influences of a globalized world.

Based in Cologne, Peter Uka is a graduate of the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. His artwork “Peace Invocation” (2023) recently entered our collection at K20 and currently shares a gallery room with artworks by Pablo Picasso and Fernand Léger.

During the talk, Peter Uka will play a selection of vinyl tracks from his personal collection. Feel free to join us and our media partner @artjunk.de over a drink with the artist on the museum’s Piazza following the public talk.
