I had the pleasure of attending Youssra’s album launch, and interestingly enough, one of its tracks had already become one of my favorite songs of 2025 long before the event.

The first time I heard the album was with my friend Peter, who recorded it. He played it for me and simply asked, “Eh ra2yak?” The track that immediately stayed with me was دوري.

For me, دوري is one of those rare songs that feels impossible to place in a single category. It carries traces of Cairo’s streets and atmosphere, subtle touches of jazz, storytelling through sound design, and lyrics that feel authentic rather than manufactured. Every element works together to tell one deep and honest story.

What I appreciate most is that the song doesn’t try to force itself on the listener. It doesn’t demand attention through loud hooks or obvious moments. Instead, it rewards curiosity. It asks you to slow down, listen carefully, and discover its layers for yourself.

The story behind the album feels just as genuine. From hearing how it started to seeing where it ended up, everything about the process felt authentic. Youssra began by sampling the sounds of Cairo and then built from there, allowing the city itself to become part of the music. You can feel that honesty throughout the entire project.

It’s the kind of album that reminds you why music is still capable of surprising us when artists create from a real place rather than chasing formulas.

And honestly—and this isn’t just because Peter is my friend—this album simply would not sound the same without the exceptional work that went into shaping its sonic identity. The recording, the textures, the details, and the atmosphere all play a huge role in making the experience what it is. taken in Institut francais d'Egypte au caire by @peterayman
