This exhibition brings together past and present student work about London from the BA (Hons) Photography course at the nearby University of West London spanning the past 10 years. My two bodies of work, ‘An Ideal for Living’ and ‘A4/M4 Heading West’ were shown on Saturday 14 June on an amazing 150 ft by 30 ft screen, along with work by my students celebrating the last 10 years of the BA Photography course I run at the University of West London.

The venue was the iconic Art Deco Gillette Factory in Hounslow and the event formed part of the London Festival of Architecture. The factory is currently undergoing a transformation into a state-of-the-art film and TV production hub.

The whole thing was an ambitious undertaking organised by Hounslow Council and 180 Studios.

Beneath the Fragile

This work was inspired both by the ancient Japanese philosophy of Wabi Sabi, where beauty is seen in the imperfections and in the acceptance of the transience in life, as well as the symbolism of Kintsugi Pottery, where something broken can be fixed and not discarded; made more beautiful than before.

I felt compelled to examine the sense of loss, so as to embrace the process of ageing, accepting my own fragility by exploring body and mind.  The need to delve further into this theme was heightened when my mother died, as it made me more aware of my own mortality and the passing of time.

Each image in this series involved digitally manipulating and overlaying three images to create a final one with a new meaning. By Juxtaposing the youthful body with the marks of aging inscribed upon it, I conveyed my struggle. The flower portraits enhanced and reiterated the transience of life and the beauty in the everyday, which is so often overlooked. By using cut flowers, which are short-lived and demonstrate their own beauty in aging, it was a further reminder of the temporality to be found both in nature and in life.

This series was exhibited at the Coningsby Gallery, as part of the University of West London’s BA (Hons) Photography degree show.

The banner was printed on Hahnemühle Rice Paper, with the texture of the paper enhancing the skin tones and the organic feel. The framed pictures were printed on Hahnemühle Photo Rag Pearl, bringing out the colours, whilst imitating the sheen found on the glaze of the Kintsugi pottery. Being able to print on such high quality paper made all the difference!

Suspended in Time

This series of self-portraits explores the fragile and constantly shifting nature of identity, using a vintage wedding dress as a symbolic object. Once belonging to another life, the dress carries memory, ritual, and a sense of loss. It becomes a threshold — a space between past and future selves, between endings and beginnings.

The photographs take place in a forest. Each image reflects a moment of inner transformation. The forest is both womb and grave — a symbolic place where the self dissolves, disappears, and sometimes re-emerges. Through long exposure, the body becomes blurred and merges with the landscape. This visual softness expresses the uncertainty between life and absence, between body and spirit.

The wedding dress represents cultural expectations, but also the possibility of escaping or reshaping them. In these images, identity is not fixed or complete; it is something that is always dying and being born again. This work is not only about who we are, but about who we become through what we lose.

As Marcel Proust wrote, “A person scattered in space and time is no longer a woman, but a series of events… a series of insoluble problems.”

This series reflects a quiet and intimate ritual of birth, death, and rebirth — a personal cycle of disappearance, transformation, and return.

The framed prints were brought to life on Hahnemühle Photo Rag Pearl, while the banners floated delicately on Hahnemühle FineArt Smooth Rice Paper (100 GSM).
These materials were essential in capturing the poetic and dreamlike quality of the work.

The series was exhibited at Coningsby Gallery, London, as part of the University of West London’s BA Photography Degree Show 2025.
