THAT WAS THE SUMMER THAT WAS- I secured a grand sublet in the Village and received a stream of generous visitors from June-August, who shared their time and thoughts. I am exceedingly grateful for all.

In a series of short conversations I ask an artist two questions about their work and process.

PETER SCHROTH

MH: Your paintings are nonrepresentational landscapes, based less on observation than a spontaneous interpretation of the natural world. You state that “Nature operates as a reflection of ourselves…”, and I’m curious if you see painting, both the process and the finished canvas, as inherently self-reflective?

PS: I would say that my finished works, if not necessarily the process, are generally self-reflective, and I would admit that I am representative of the cliché, “the artist paints himself.” The degree to which this may be true varies immensely among artists and may be more or less apparent in their work. In my case, I do feel it is quite plainly evident in certain compositions that employ a particular value range or palette. I guess I am merging the subject with my interior view, and I have often thought of some of these works as self-portraits. In my artist statement, I suggest that the landscape is an image or idea possessing a character that is naturally reflective of human society and its struggles.

MH: You paint en plein air, most recently in Central Park, and you state that it’s essential to work on site rather than from photographs. And yet the paintings are often abstracted to the point of being unrecognizable as landscapes, which suggests that something else is filtering through. Is this the human element that you refer to—neither landscape nor portrait, but a middle ground that embodies both?

PS: The short and simple answer is - yes. Less simply, I am a painter who draws inspiration or visual stimulation from nature but does not want to make landscape paintings. A recent visitor to the studio remarked ‘so these are landscapes/not, working with but against the subject.’ I am representing an experience over a depiction, such as a photograph provides. But I would extend the idea of experience saying that it consists of the subject before me along with all versions of it I have painted in the past, and equally, my acquaintanceship with the history of painting.

I spent the holidays revisiting my earlier practice with ink/wash and traditional landscape compositions. Warmed up with some copies after my hero, Claude L. It was a a pleasant break from the anxiety-inducing oil painting.

My latest review of Rob Lyon at Hales

Anyone with an aversion to charm might want to sidestep Rob Lyon’s seductive show at Hales Gallery. Those seeking a diversion from the world’s traumas may find a refuge there. From Sussex, England, the artist finds his inspiration in the local landscape – a common point of reference for modern British painters. Their ghosts and others’ are clearly traceable here. Indications emerge of several additional painting traditions. Lyon borrows freely from his British forbears – note his use of rosy sand and faded blues in line with their penchant for muted palettes – but also from the Cubists and Giorgio Morandi. ...

One might wonder what a world without rectangles might look like. There are no rectangles in nature, so we invented them to define space, tidy the view, and organize our thoughts. They are so definite, and here they are even slightly imposing as they march forward to occupy the foreground.

Tom McGlynn continues to grow a decade-long train of thought with a new selection of paintings in This Here at Rick Wester Fine Art. Consistent with his oeuvre, he arrays a selection of color rectangles suspended within various fields of color. An acquaintanceship with the origin of this direction, accompanied by a fresh pair of eyes, will enable a viewer to put aside the parallels with Mondrian, Albers, or even Hans Hoffmann, and see these works anew.
