Thank you to everyone who joined us to celebrate the opening of "Voices in the Mirror" at our Tribeca gallery.

The exhibition brings together images by Gordon Parks alongside reflections from the people and families he photographed, offering new context to some of the artist's most enduring work. We were honored to welcome Peter W. Kunhardt (@Peterkunhardt), Jr., Executive Director of The Gordon Parks Foundation (@GordonParksFoundation), and so many of the artist's community for the evening.

"Voices in the Mirror" is on view at our Tribeca gallery through November 7.

Gordon Parks was one of the most influential American artists of the twentieth century, a pioneering photographer, filmmaker, writer, and composer whose work reshaped how Black life was seen and understood. As the first African American staff photographer at Life magazine, Parks used his camera to confront racism, poverty, and segregation while revealing the dignity, beauty, and complexity of his subjects. His practice extended beyond documentation, making art a powerful instrument for social justice and a means of giving visibility to lives and experiences too often excluded from the American narrative.

In the video, Joeonna Bellorado-Samuels (@joeonna), a senior director at Jack Shainman Gallery (@jackshainman), introduces 'Gordon Parks: Voices in the Mirror' at the gallery’s Tribeca location. Marking the 20th anniversary of The Gordon Parks Foundation (@gordonparksfoundation), the exhibition brings together Parks’s photographs with the memories and perspectives of the people he documented. These personal stories offer a deeper understanding of the circumstances behind the images, from experiences of segregation to the tenderness and complexity of everyday Black life.

“Voices in the Mirror” is now on view at our Tribeca gallery, revisiting images by Gordon Parks through the reflections of the people and families he photographed — for the first time, the families of Muhammad Ali and Malcolm X, among others, reflect on the photographs and their enduring power.

Rest in Peace to our wonderful cousin Katharine Trowbridge who tragically died from a unexpected heart issue on Sunday. Just last week Katharine texted me this video to excite me for the summer ahead. It was hello and goodbye together and I’ve watched it a thousand times. Named after my grandmother, Katharine was the keeper of tradition, family and Maine and we are all truly devastated. Life changes in an instant.
