My most recent sewing machine acquisition is this sleek, mint-green, late Fifties/early Sixties Necchi Supernova Ultra, an all-metal zigzagger made in Italy. My first-ever Facebook Marketplace purchase, it shipped from Louisiana and arrived in excellent shape, albeit with a few minor issues one expects buying a vintage sewing machine online. After some minor tweaking, she stitches beautifully. Next week I should have a full set of embroidery cams for her—so there’s more excitement on the way. So much more satisfying than the two computerized machines I purchased in February and returned due to almost immediate mechanical problems. The newly opened @museumatfit exhibit, Statement Sleeves, is wonderful! It’s in the smaller, upstairs gallery, but the garments are gorgeous and really make you consider and appreciate the variety of sleeves styles that have been popular in the last few centuries, up to the current time. My just-completed muslin of Vogue 1253, a vintage Claude Montana loose-fitting double-breasted overcoat pattern from the early 1990’s (pic 2). I used a second-hand cotton sheet. Of the 5 or so coat muslins I’ve made this fall, this one is my favorite. In the pic I’m wearing the coat over just a tee shirt so bulkier clothes will fill it out a little more; it would also be made in a sturdy wool fabric, interfaced and fully lined. The silhouette reminds me of a men’s Edwardian overcoat (pic 7), particularly with the somewhat flared hem. The only change I made to the pattern was to hack about 8” off the bottom. Knowing from my last Montana pattern how big they’re designed, this time I cut a Size 12 which would normally correspond to a 34” chest, even though my chest is 37” and there’s still plenty of room. I think I’d add the sleeve trim for a somewhat military flavor. I’ll add at least one pocket to the muslin just to see if I like the design, depth, and placement. Similar to this also is the classic, sporty polo coat—popular in the Thirties and Forties with both men and women—which usually had patch pockets. A close inspection of the beautiful vintage Eighties black Claude Montana ladies jacket I purchased this week on eBay. I believe it’s a lightweight wool gabardine; the seller didn’t know and the fabric content label is missing. Perhaps that fact and the two missing cuff shank buttons is why the jacket was deeply discounted (also seller’s photos distorted the fabric giving it an inconsistent moire effect).
