Recent work: joelsternfeld.netJoel Sternfeld (born June 30, 1944) is an artist-photographer whose work is concerned with utopic and dystopic possibilities of the American experience. His work contributed to the establishment of color photography as a respected artistic medium.Ever since the publication of his landmark study, American Prospects in 1987 his work has maintained conceptual and political aspects, while also being steeped in history, art history, landscape theory and attention to seasonal passage.Sternfeld is the recipient of two Guggenheim Fellowships and spent a year in Italy on a Rome Prize. He teaches at Sarah Lawrence College, where he holds the Noble Foundation Chair in Art and Cultural History.Sternfeld’s new website offers a deep-dive into his work, providing map-like overviews and paths into the details. The design takes cues from Sternfeld’s emphasis on place and time. Each of his bodies of work are represented in their digital form as high resolution images, book details, writings, and associated press. Recent work: Rebecca Schiffman is a singer-songwriter, jewelry designer, and visual artist from New York City. She is also one of my oldest friends. She correctly thought I’d be interested in collaborating with her on a lyric video for her song “Beach Vacation” because of my interest in the topic of the song: time.She was correct. But I found it hard to create a static video file so as usual I opened a web browser and a blank HTML file, ultimately delivering a web browser installation instead that generates itself moment to moment without AI. Every visitor will experience a different version as it essentially plays live.
