Today is Ukrainian Independence Day. 34 years since the fall of communism in Eastern Europe. A perfect day to share one of my favorite 3D captures I grabbed during my trip to Kyiv. It is also one of the most important - this beautiful monument which can be found on Muzeinyi Lane near the city center of Ukraines capitol is of Viacheslav Chornovil (1937-1999) masterfully sculpted by artist Bohdan Mazur. Chornovil was an incredibly important and influential historical figure in Ukraine - a writer and journalist, an activist against Soviet repression, an anti communist, a political prisoner, but above all of these things he was a Ukrainian. If you are interested in learning about the story of this nation and the journey from 91’ Chornovil is essential and 34 years later worthy of our study and consideration. Perhaps now more than ever. I had the very special opportunity to visit the HQ of the most prevalent NGO here in Ukraine providing humanitarian aid to people who live on the frontlines. Global Empowerment Mission has offices and operations around the world and they have been present here in Ukraine since the start of the full scale invasion in 2022. At their headquarters they work to fill aid kits with food and goods made by Ukrainian farmers and distribute the aid with the help of IDPs (internally displaced people) It is an incredible organization and effort and a beautiful sight in this challenging place. @bayofpigs2506 Across Miami if you know where to look you can still find some of the most important reminders of the history of our city. The Bay of Pigs invasion was a pivotal battle in the Cold War which took place over 60 years ago but its impact on South Florida is immeasurable. In Little Havana and across the county you can find the monuments to this great event today doing the work of telling this story to this and future generations here in Miami. This 3D scanning project to document these monuments is an exploration of the role of technology in the documentation of history but to put it more frankly this project is an attempt to further save these pieces of history and their message by transitioning them into the three dimensional digital realm using photogrammetry and 3d scanning techniques. This project would not have been possible without the constant guidance support and passion of members of the Cuban community and Brigade 2506 who took the time to befriend and educate me on so many things about this incredible story. Thank you to Ceci and Yuly for teaching me - to Johnny and Felix for inspiring me - and to everyone who sat with me, spoke with me, and shared your stories. *these monuments are the first to be added to my digital archive of 3d scans of historic sites and I look forward to continuing and expanding this project!
