Introducing the design and illustration for @dalayzigarren OASE, a new cigar designed for the road and daily respites.

It was a long dream of mine to design a cigar band and packaging as my style and approach, inspired by the old world, really suits cigar design in general which is often driven by details and historic craftsmanship.

It was especially important and meaningful to me as this cigar and the story behind it is deeply personal for the founder Salih Dalay.

He recalls his father’s legacy of Turkish folktales. As a child, he grew up on his father’s knee listening to Nasreddin Hodscha stories. These witty, philosophical tales (Nasreddin is perhaps Turkey’s best-known trickster-scholar) inform the cigar’s spirit. The band depicts Nasreddin on his donkey, and each 5-pack bundle includes a printed Nasreddin anecdote. This subtle tribute to family and tradition sets the OASE apart.

Salih Dalay: »Just as the idea for this small oasis came to me, I was reminded of my father’s stories and of the motif of Hodja on his donkey. A painting that I happened upon and bought in Istanbul’s Old Bazaar became the basis for our designer Peter Voth. What he was able to make of this image has so fascinated me that it wound up imprinted onto my skin.«

There is nothing more rewarding when your client tattoos your design (see slide 9). So it was just a great journey from the beginning to the end.

The main fonts I used for the project are Cigarro by the one and only @dangrettadesign as well as Philapost Serif by @novisouldado. Product Photography by @michaelkreyer. Special thanks to @michaelgunblues for the art direction and @salihdalay for the trust. Really meant a lot!

Another great coffee company I collaborated with lately. @luxcoffeecompany inquired me to design a shop banner that is now hanging in the new store in New Richmond, Wisconsin. For this project I used a lot of @fortfoundry like Pentz, Kensington, Tiller & Shackleton. by @petervoth

Very rarely I post about myself or my private life. But from time to time I share a glimpse to show that there is actually a family and human being and not a machine behind all those polished design work.

Last week we had a beautiful vacation in the beautiful Oberallgäu in Bayern. Such a needed week with my family. Completely without smartphone. Such a blessing. Now I'm back at it and ready to churn out some great projects.

Last year I got approached by @tastybranding to create the major heraldry and imagery for the new and upcoming »Smithson Steak & Seafood« Restaurant.

It was a very complex project with a lot of revisions but in the end it was all worth it. Really satisfied of how this turned out. On the last slide you can get a glimpse of the initial pencil sketch and a work in progress shot. by @petervoth
