I thought the derby was a dud last night so let me take it back to my favorite player of all time, Sammy Sosa. Did you know that there have been only 3 home runs that have topped 520 feet in the home run derby and Sammy Sosa has 2 of them? Sammy had a 5 year stretch where he averaged 58 HR, 141 RBI, and a .306 BA, and his 7 year peak included an average of 53 HR, 132 RBI, and a .295 BA. He looked so cool mashing those dingers in 2002 with his hat backwards.

"They don't think it be like it is, but it do." Arguably one of the most famous baseball quotes of all time from the late Oscar Gamble. Not only did Oscar have a way with words, but he had a stellar afro and a very unique batting stance. I have no idea where the card is from in the first slide, but my guess is some cereal box, does anyone know?

Here's a fun card. This is Ron LeFlore. He didn't begin playing baseball until he was incarcerated. He played so well as a prison baseball player that another inmate passed along the information to a friend who was a good friend of then Tigers manager, Billy Martin. A weekend furlough for a tryout with the Tigers turned into him being paroled to the Tigers and immediately signed a contract. I think the funniest thing about all of this is that Ron LeFlore was originally serving a 5-15 year sentence for armed robbery and after he was released he led the league in stolen bases twice and was the first player to ever lead both the NL and AL in steals (in separate seasons of course.) He even said, “Stealing was my specialty. As far back as I can remember, I was stealing things and getting away with it. … Every time I went into a store I would steal something, even if it was just a rubber ball or one of those ten-cent miniature pies, just to show the other kids I could do it. Sometimes I would steal for the thrill of it. I got away with so much stuff that I began to believe I couldn’t get caught. Usually everything I did was right out in the open, too. I thought I was the Invisible Man.” I guess stealing goes for bases too. His career ended up being cut short as he battled a drug and legal problems.
