Anatomy of Time, created by British artist Petroc Sesti, is a 3-meter-tall sculpture located underground at The Henderson. It invites the public into a uniquely immersive sensory experience.

Inspired by the universe and spiral galaxies, the work’s semi-transparent design creates a dreamlike environment. Through the movement of light and shadow, it encourages viewers to reflect and reimagine the possibilities of space.

This dynamic optical sculpture uses a specially made transparent container filled with a large volume of liquid. Driven by a precise mechanical system, the liquid continuously rotates, as if giving the abstract concept of “time” a visible physical form.

Inside the container, the surrounding architecture, garden greenery, and passing figures are reflected, distorted, and inverted, making it difficult to distinguish reality from illusion. What you feel instead is time and space being rearranged before your eyes.

Tracing the Void exhibition unfolded at Four Seasons Doha as an evening where optical geometry, light, and perception converged.

Beneath a field of sixty thousand perforated stars and among optical prisms, guests gathered for an immersive culinary performance shaped by shifting constellations of light and celebrating Art Basel Qatar.

Returning to Doha after installing Vanishing Point at Qatar Foundation, I am pleased to continue this dialogue between cosmology, sculpture and human experience.

It’s a pleasure to revisit this article in Art Tribune, featuring a photograph of Tree Beacon.

In 2025, I took part in THE SKYWALK exhibition in Venice, selected by the Venice Biennale, where Tree Beacon was selected and presented at Campo San Lorenzo.

“Sesti’s Tree Beacon, a 29 foot sculpture developed from his experience working in rainforest environments alongside forestry scientists using laser scanning technologies to study the complex root systems of buttress rooted trees.

Formed from hand worked sheet metal, with each component individually welded and polished, the sculpture uses fabrication rather than traditional casting to reduce material weight and embodied carbon.”

HEART OF OKEANOS

As Climate Week gathers momentum in New York, I’m excited to share new renderings of Heart of Okeanos, ahead of its deployment off South Beach during Miami Art Week this December.

It will be my second environmental artwork to find a permanent home on the East Coast of the United States this year, following the installation of Tree Beacon in Newport, Rhode Island.

Inspired by the cardiovascular anatomy of the blue whale, Heart of Okeanos is a 30 ton sculpture that will be deployed into the ocean as part of REEFLINE, becoming a new habitat for coral and marine life.

I hope Heart of Okeanos can become a small beacon for ocean conservation, a work to be found, explored and discovered beneath the surface.

TREE BEACON

As the UN General Assembly gathers in New York with climate action high on the agenda, Tree Beacon has crossed the Atlantic to its permanent home in Newport, Rhode Island.

Inspired by Sir David Attenborough, the work began with presenting the first model to Sir David following my return from the rainforest, where I had been laser-scanning some of its most iconic giant trees.

First realised as a smaller recycled-bronze work, selected for the Climate Room at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition in London, Tree Beacon evolved into a nine-metre sculpture, hand-forged in mirror polished stainless steel, before being unveiled at the Venice Biennale on Sir David’s 99th birthday, and now permanently installed in America.

I hope Tree Beacon can stand as a small reminder of what we still have the power to protect.

Anatomy of Time is a kinetic optical sculpture that invites reflection on the invisible forces shaping our universe. Drawing inspiration from cosmology and the spiral geometry of galaxies and the event horizon of Black Holes, its vortex form embodies the tension between gravity and light, stillness and motion.

Tree Beacon has completed the first part of its journey.

Seen here being prepared for transport and shipment across the Atlantic, the sculpture travelled in six sections within forty foot containers before arriving in the U.S., where it will soon be installed.

Tree Beacon explores the relationship between trees, ecosystems, and the natural systems that connect us all.

Part of the SKYWALK exhibition during La Biennale di Venezia, Tree Beacon explores the connections between forests, climate, and the natural world.

I was pleased to come across this recent article by Clayton Calvert reflecting on the inaugural Art Basel Qatar.

It was wonderful to revisit a remarkable week in Doha and to see Tracing The Void included amongst a selection of outstanding artworks and presentations from across the fair and the wider city.

Alongside Tracing The Void at the Four Seasons Doha, visitors also experienced Vanishing Point, part of the permanent collection of the Qatar Foundation, chaired by Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser.

My thanks to Diego Volpe Vivero, Art Basel Qatar, Artlyst, Her Excellency Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, Qatar Museums, Qatar Foundation, Four Seasons Doha, Wael Shawky, and the many artists, curators, collectors, and visitors who contributed to such an exceptional inaugural edition.
