You’ll be able to tell once you start seeing it.
It’s there.
How do they talk about people? Do they talk about people at all?
How do they frame pet guardianship? Is there only one “right” way?

If someone has a decent following and posts regularly, but hasn’t mentioned anything recently, just notice that.

Be mindful of it before you hit follow moving forward.
Once you see it, it’s hard to unsee.

There is almost always another account with similar content that does align with your values and deserves your support.

If you have the time, look up a popular account you don’t align with (for example, ICE). On their page, IG will show you followers you have in common. This gives you a chance to do a quiet “audit” of who you’re following and what they may be supporting. Yes, sometimes people follow accounts to stay informed. That’s different. You can usually tell who’s observing versus who’s aligned.

You hold the power here.

Let this be a reminder to uplift and amplify the people who consistently speak out on important and uncomfortable issues - not just when it’s easy.

And to be clear: this is largely directed at white people and white-led organizations. People of color have been doing this work for a long time. When we’re silent, it’s often because we’re exhausted from speaking up, being ignored, silenced, or gaslit. taken in United States by @petunityaction

🎉 PG COUNTY BREED BAN REPEALED 🎉
Effective today, 2/2/26

And during Black History Month, no less 💜

After nearly 30 years, PG residents can now legally own or foster any breed, including pit bulls. Dogs are evaluated by behavior, not appearance, with an emphasis on education, safety, and shared responsibility.

What this means for our community:
• Fair, consistent rules for all dog owners
• Support for responsible pet guardianship
• A safer county built through prevention, not punishment

What pet owners should know:
• Dogs must be licensed
• Leash and containment rules apply county-wide
• Force-free training and early support make a difference

PG PUP is here to support you:
• Free Pet Parenting Class (force-free & bilingual):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EbWAif_Jgxg
• Dog licensing (required in PG County):
https://individualanimallicense.princegeorgescountymd.gov

This moment belongs to all of us.
Save this, share it, and help a neighbor stay informed. taken in Prince George's County, Maryland by @petunityaction

💜🎉Thank you @greater_greater_washington for sharing our story.
We know this is just one of many families deeply affected by the breed ban in @princegeorgescounty Prince George’s County. For decades, evidence has shown that these bans do not make communities safer—and in fact, they often cause real harm.

We see it every day:
Families being forced to choose between their homes and their beloved pets based solely on appearance
Dogs being abandoned because they “look like” a banned breed
Good people avoiding our county because their dog isn’t welcome here
Shelters overcrowded with wonderful, loving dogs labeled “illegal”
And our county? It loses revenue, repels good neighbors, and upholds a policy rooted in outdated, visual discrimination—not public safety.

We still can’t understand why @princegeorgesmd holds onto being the largest jurisdiction in the U.S. with this archaic ban. It benefits no one—not even the county.
As we push closer to legislation that would finally allow “pit bull-type” dogs back into loving homes, we’re asking you to join us.

Share your story.
Whether you’ve been directly affected like Cait, AJ, and Poptart, or whether you’ve chosen not to live, work, or do business in PGC because of the ban—your voice matters.
Let’s show our leaders, @pgcountyexec and @pgccouncil just how many of us are impacted by this unjust policy. Together, we can change it.

If you know us, you know this is part of a bigger message - but we wanted to break it down to its simplest form.

Pets depend on people. And right now, too many pets are paying the price for broken promises and careless decisions.

Under this administration, families are losing housing, income, and stability - and pets are among those who suffer. Dogs left behind when a caretaker is taken suddenly. Cats without food when money runs out. Pets ending up in shelters that are already overwhelmed.

We’ve seen policies that were supposed to protect people and families with pets ignored or rolled back. Protections for animals have been weakened, leaving them at risk. Enforcement of animal welfare laws has dropped as tax dollars meant to protect animals are redirected toward other forms of enforcement instead of care and safety. Promises to help pets and their families? Too many have been broken.

It’s alarming. It’s upsetting. And it’s happening closer to home than many people realize.

If you’re reading this, you already care about animals. You’re already part of a network that looks out for pets. The next step is simple: bring that care a little closer to home.

Meet your neighbors’ pets.
See if they could use extra food or supplies.
Offer to help walk a dog.
Let your pets meet and play together.

A few extra minutes, a bag of pet food, or a friendly check-in can help pets stay safe and cared for, and often opens the door to real human connection too.

When people suffer, pets suffer too.

This administration does not care about our pets and the families that care for them.

Help make sure your neighbors have what they need. taken in United States by @petunityaction

Update as of 1/7/26: 2/2/26 is the effective ban lift date!

Happy New Year! 🎉

We’re back from break and want to continue being as transparent as possible as this work moves forward.

We waited to share updates until we had clear, accurate information, given the many moving parts and partners involved in implementation. As soon as key dates and details are confirmed, we’ll share them.

In the meantime, the best way to help is to support the shelter and support pets and their people - through volunteering, fostering, donating, and spreading accurate information. Thank you for being part of this community and this work. taken in Prince George's County, Maryland by @petunityaction

From PG PUP to you 💜 we are so grateful for every one of you.

This year, dogs found homes, families stayed together, and our community grew stronger — all because people like you showed up. Every microchip, every meal, every volunteer hour, and every act of care added up to real, lasting change.

We microchipped over 1,000 dogs, distributed hundreds of bags of pet food, cultivated meaningful partnerships, welcomed new supporters, and helped countless dogs stay safe, healthy, and loved.

Our work literally wouldn’t exist without this community. You make the difference — you keep dogs safe, families whole, and hope alive.

This upcoming Giving Tuesday (or whenever you choose to support), you can help us keep these stories going. Every bit of care matters.

Here is my full testimony from this past Tuesday's final hearing on CB-97 to repeal the County’s 3-decade-old breed-specific pit bull ban.

In summary, this bill lifts the County’s Pit Bull Terrier ban and provides for a pilot program to foster and adopt Pit Bulls in the County. It also revises certain definitions, increases certain civil penalties, expands the leash law, and expands the type of dangerous animals with requirements in the County Code.

Thanks again @petunityproject @humaneworldforanimals for growing the coalition and making sure that the people came together to make their voices heard.

We came in strong asking for change — now let’s be even louder saying thank you. 💜

All seven council members who voted aye to repeal BSL made a genuinely brave choice. It takes real courage to move past long-held myths, fear, and outdated narratives, especially when so many voters have been taught to be afraid.

Let’s show them that doing the right thing doesn’t go unnoticed.

✨ Please send a quick thank-you email to the Council for their aye votes. ✨

We’ve already drafted the email — it’s truly one click to send your thank-you note.

Link in bio and below to send your note of thanks.
