What does Pevsner say about Kelmscott Manor?

Featured in the Pevsner Architectural Guide to Oxfordshire: North and West, Kelmscott Manor was the holiday residence of artist, designer and writer William Morris, until his death in 1896.

Extract from the Pevsner Guide:
KELMSCOTT MANOR, at the S end of the village, close to the Thames. Set in a garden enclosed by high stone walls, homely and informal, of grey stone, with mullioned windows under hoodmoulds, ball-finialled gables and diagonally set chimneys. It was built c. 1600, probably for Thomas Turner, to a U-plan with two projecting gabled wings to the rear, W; and enlarged for another Thomas Turner, c. 1665–70, by a high parlour wing projecting NE. The latter is given an increased appearance of height by a slight tapering (or entasis) towards the top, a sophisticated trick unexpected in a small country house. This is especially pronounced on its twin-gabled tower-like S and E fronts. The gables here have eared rectangular windows with small triangular pediments in place of the traditional square hoods. Mullioned-and-transomed windows below. The N and W fronts have the traditional bracketed wooden gutters; discreet N porch dated 1966.

Happy New Year! Before we look ahead to 2026, we’re starting off with a recap of the end of last year.

In 2025, the Board of Trustees of the Society of Architectural Historians of Great Britain (SAHGB) decided to create the Colvin Special Award to recognise exceptional works and series of reference volumes in the discipline of architectural history. We were delighted to be informed that in its inaugural year, the Colvin Special Award had been awarded to the Pevsner Architectural Guides and its editors (listed in the second slide).

Just before Christmas we attended the ceremony to accept the award - a fantastic way to end the year!

Many thanks to @thesahgb for the photograph of the event. by @pevsnerarchitecturalguides

‘Don’t assume everything is online - it isn’t.’

As we get into September, you might be starting a course in architecture studies or thinking about broadening your knowledge independently. We asked our Pevsner editors why the guides are useful for those of you who perhaps haven’t picked one up before…

Trethevy Quoit, 1 m. ne.

One of Britain’s best-preserved Neolithic portal dolmens. The long sides of the rectangular chamber project beyond the e end stone, where a small ante-chamber was created with two additional uprights; one now missing. The rear w support fell before 1850 leaving the capstone more steeply tilted than originally designed, and the ante-chamber higher. Door-like rectangular gap in e support, apparently natural, allowed crawling access to main chamber, presumably to perform rituals. Small circular hole in capstone’s ne corner not yet adequately explained. Low stone mound surrounding quoit probably secondary, perhaps Bronze Age.

Jonah and the Whale by Abraham van Linge, 1641-42,
University College chapel, Oxford

The original stained glass is by Abraham van Linge and of 1641-2, having survived the Civil War and Interregnum in storage. It is his magnum opus, rich in colour and exuberant in the telling of the stories, the figures, undeniably crude, mostly move in landscape settings.

Lichfield Cathedral, N Transept portal, 1220s-40s

‘The tour of Lichfield Cathedral begins with the transepts, the earliest work visible externally, dating from the 1220s-40s… The North transept (pictured here) has shafted buttresses and an elaborate twin portal encrusted with leaf decoration. It is the least restored of the cathedral portals, and originally a work of high quality, some of the original carving still evident. The columns stand in front of dogtooth, in two layers, the thinner columns behind.’
