Most of this does not exist yet.

La Comète is being built in stages. Phase one is complete. Phase two, a pitched roof extension clad in timber, starts on site in the next few weeks. The landscaping, the garden and the boundaries follow after that.

The landscaping has just been approved, and the thinking behind it is not just what gets planted but where you will actually want to be. A garden works when it is structured into places, each coming into its own at a different time. Somewhere that catches the morning. Somewhere sheltered for the evening. Something worth looking at in February as well as in June.

The hard landscaping sets those places out. The planting and materials give each of them a character, chosen for texture, colour, season, pollinators and biodiversity.

Planting also settles a new building into its surroundings, softening the structure into the enclosure around it, so that in a few years it reads as though it had always been there.

A house that has been left tells you everything.

These are the interiors of Les Galliennes farmhouse before the work began. Arched alcoves either side of the chimney breast. A rotting staircase within the tourelle. Paint in colours nobody has chosen for fifty years.

Recording all of this properly is the first job on a protected building. What is original, what is significant and to what extent? What has failed and why. It is the evidence base for every decision that follows, and it is what a planning case is built on.

Much of it was kept. Some of it could not be. But none of it was lost by accident.

Two finished. Two to go.

At Talbot Valley the farmhouse and the Hayloft barn are complete and lived in. These are the two still ahead of us.

One is the protected barn adjacent to Les Galliennes farmhouse. The other was, until recently, essentially a ruin. Both now have permission to become homes.

There is a point in a project like this where a building looks like a lost cause. Roof gone, walls open, a tree growing out of a window. It takes some faith, and a good deal of vision, to see past that.

But the stone is sound, the openings are still legible, and these buildings have stood in this valley for a very long time. The job is to make them useful again without pretending the last two hundred years did not happen.

We will share these again as they progress.

Once, this was a flower growing farmstead.

When Whitmore Consulting bought the site in Talbot Valley in 2019, the buildings had been left for years. A farmhouse still full of the previous century, a barn open to the sky, outbuildings disappearing under ivy.

PF+A were appointed to look at the whole holding rather than one building at a time. We secured planning permission across every building and outbuilding on the site, and divided it so that each could be brought back as a home in its own right.

Two are now complete and lived in. Les Galliennes farmhouse, a protected building, and the Hayloft barn, both restored and back in use. Two more are underway.

Working with protected buildings can be slow. Every decision about what to keep, repair or rebuild has to be argued and justified through a deep understanding of the existing. But a holding that was heading for ruin will have four homes full of character, with their historic fabric preserved, and this part of the valley has its life back.

The right plants in the right places.

Once the structure of a garden is settled, the planting is what brings it to life. It is also where a good deal of the value sits, and not only visually.

Trees and hedging give shelter and privacy. Deep planting beds hold the soil and slow surface water. Mixed, seasonal planting supports pollinators and gives something back to the wider landscape rather than simply looking tidy.

Getting that right takes proper knowledge, which is why we work with specialists rather than guessing. The plants that thrive in an exposed Guernsey garden are not the ones that will do well in a sheltered courtyard.

A well planted garden matures rather than declines. Ten years on it should be better than the day it went in.

A garden is not an afterthought.

We think the outside space deserves the same consideration as the building itself. Orientation of hard landscaping, how the levels work, what is planted and where, all of it is better resolved alongside the architecture than added once the scaffolding comes down.

Planting does more than soften a scheme. Trees, shrubs and flowers give shelter and structure, support biodiversity, stabilise the ground and help manage surface water. Done properly, it adds real value.

Taking advice is key. We collaborate with experienced landscape and garden designers, including @acreswildgardendesign, @growlimited , @petersfieldplantcentre, @guernseygardensltd and Alec Tostevin. We have also had the pleasure of working with Josh Sexton over the years.

The result is a home and a garden that work as one, with the kind of habitat and outlook that is genuinely good to live with.

Goodbye to this legend.
With the Octopus site changing hands after the shocking fire, we congratulate the Pesrins for all they achieved, and wish the new owners well.

We loved designing this building and seeing it become one of Guernsey’s greatest restaurants. The passion, skill and hard work was evident from the outset, and the bar was raised- what a great venue it was! 🐙

Following the recent approval of this town centre regeneration project, it’s a good opportunity to share the thinking behind the design.

Rather than extending further out of town, projects like this make better use of existing buildings and underused sites, helping to create more homes while strengthening the character and vitality of the town centre.

By replacing redundant office space with thoughtfully designed apartments, and introducing a landscaped courtyard at the heart of the scheme, the development creates a place that is both functional and enjoyable to live in.

Good architecture isn’t just about creating new buildings. It’s about improving the places we already have and making them work better for the people who use them.
