A couple customers came in today and I ended up doing a quick mini lesson on proper grip.

Honestly, this is one of the most overlooked parts of firearms education. I grew up around firearms and was taught safety, etiquette, discipline, and respect for them from a very young age, but even then I was shooting handguns wrong up until my mid 20s when I finally started understanding what a proper grip actually was and how to control a handgun efficiently.

The crazy part is grip is directly tied to safety too. Holding a handgun improperly can easily lead to the slide reciprocating into your hand and cutting you. I see it happen all the time — at least once a week I’m cleaning blood off door handles because somebody assumed simply owning a gun automatically made them competent with one.

A proper grip affects recoil control, consistency, follow-up shots, and overall confidence with the firearm. The little details people overlook are usually the ones that matter most.

This is why I always say mindset matters more than equipment.

Victor doesn’t even own a firearm.

He isn’t chasing a CCW qualification. He isn’t asking what trigger to buy, what compensator is flatest, or what optic will shave a tenth of a second off his draw. He just shows up on his lunch break, puts in the work, and learns.

After only a handful of lunch break sessions, I’m confident he could pass a California CCW qualification without even knowing what the course of fire is.

Think about that.

Meanwhile, I’ll meet people who’ve spent thousands on guns, optics, compensators, springs, and aftermarket parts, but they’re still chasing shortcuts instead of fundamentals. They’ll burn through ammo hoping skill magically appears.

It doesn’t.

Skill comes from deliberate practice. Repetition. Coaching. Showing up consistently.

The gear isn’t what tells me how serious someone is their willingness to work does.

If your goal is simply to “qualify,” you’ll probably stay around that level. But if your goal is to become genuinely proficient, qualifications become something you pass along the way, not something you have to worry about.

Stop chasing the bare minimum.

Start chasing competence.

There’s no peptide for shooting.

No injection. No shortcut. No life hack that magically gives you better recoil control, a cleaner draw, better target transitions, or more accurate hits.

That’s one of the things I love most about this skill. You earn it.

People can buy gear. People can copy drills. People can watch endless videos. But when the timer goes off, none of that matters if you haven’t put in the reps.

Skill is built one repetition at a time.

Whether it’s low barricades, high barricades, movement, or transitions, every smooth run you see is built on hours of mistakes, corrections, and practice that nobody posts.

There are plenty of things in life you can try to shortcut. Shooting isn’t one of them.

Get on the range. Put in the work. Earn every hit.

As an instructor, I believe I owe it to my students to understand more than just the way I carry.

Personally, I carry concealed in the waistband. That’s what works best for me. But my job isn’t to convince everyone to carry exactly the way I do.

I should be proficient with off-body carry, purse carry, appendix, 3 o’clock, 6 o’clock no matter where the firearm is staged. Why? Because every student has different circumstances. Some spend their lives in a wheelchair. Some have physical limitations. Some wear clothing that doesn’t support carrying in the waistband. Others simply have different needs or preferences.

Would I choose every carry method for myself? No.

But if a student trusts me to teach them, then I owe it to them to have put in the work. I need to understand the strengths, the weaknesses, the common mistakes, and the most efficient way to access the firearm from their setup not just mine.

That’s why you’ll see me practicing from a concealed purse today. Not because it’s my everyday carry, but because a good instructor should be able to teach from any common carry position. If I’m going to help someone carry safely and effectively, I need experience with the equipment and method they’re actually using.

I’d rather have a student carrying safely in a way that fits their lifestyle than not carrying at all because someone told them there was only one “right” way.

The carry method may change.

The fundamentals never do.

Most people only see the shooting. They don’t see what goes into becoming an instructor or staying a good one.

This wasn’t just a range day. This was an instructor development course where every instructor was assigned a topic, taught it to a room full of other instructors, answered questions, accepted critiques, and then had to take that lesson straight to the firing line.

From there, you had to build your own drill, brief your shooters, give live range commands, manage safety, and run the line as the Range Officer while evaluating everyone’s performance.

It’s one thing to perform. It’s another thing entirely to teach others how to perform safely and consistently under your instruction.

No shortcuts. No ego. Just learning from other instructors, taking constructive criticism, and becoming better at passing knowledge on to the next shooter.

The goal is never to stop being a student. The better I become as an instructor, the better my students become.

People often ask how someone gets started with firearms training. The truth is, sometimes it starts with nothing more than curiosity.

For a while, our maintenance man would watch from a distance while I was teaching. One day while I was taking out the trash, I finally asked him, “Have you ever wanted to learn?” His answer was yes.

The challenge? Time.

He works here until 3:00 PM, then has to be at another job by 4:00 PM. I offered to stay after work and give him all the time he needed, but his schedule simply doesn’t allow it. So instead, we’ve made the most of what he does have his 30 minute lunch breaks.

For several lunch breaks, we never stepped onto the range. Instead, we spent that time learning. We covered firearm safety, safe handling, basic marksmanship concepts, and how the firearm actually functions. Before someone ever presses a trigger, I want them to understand why they’re doing what they’re doing not just copy what they see.

Only after he built that foundation did we take the next step. He earned it.

This was the first time he’d ever fired a gun, and seeing him safely put everything we’d been working on into practice was incredibly rewarding. I don’t care if it sounds corny helping someone experience that first shot with confidence, knowing they understand how to safely handle a firearm, is one of the best parts of being an instructor.

Safety and education don’t stop because someone has limited time, speaks a different language, or has a demanding schedule. If someone is willing to learn, I’ll do my best to meet them where they are.

Progress doesn’t always happen in giant leaps sometimes it’s built 30 minutes at a time.

Safety always comes first, but communication shouldn’t be a barrier to learning.

This video wasn’t about shooting it was about safely handling a firearm and building a solid foundation.

Our maintenance man has worked around the range for years, and I’d always catch him watching from a distance whenever classes were going on. You could tell he was curious. One day while I was taking the trash out, I asked him, “Have you ever wanted to learn?” He smiled and said yes, so we made it happen.

English isn’t his first language, but that shouldn’t stop someone from receiving quality firearms education. As instructors, it’s our job to find a way to teach not find a reason not to.

There are responsible people from every background and every language who deserve access to safe, professional instruction. If that means slowing down, using a translator app, demonstrating everything visually, or taking extra time to make sure someone truly understands, then that’s exactly what I’ll do.

And if I’m not the best person to help because of a language barrier, I’ll gladly point someone toward an instructor who can. The goal has never been my ego it’s making sure people receive safe, effective training.

Hopefully one day technology will make real-time translation seamless. Until then, I’m happy to put in the extra effort to bridge that gap.

Safety and education don’t stop because people speak different languages. Everyone deserves the opportunity to learn, understand, and build confidence, no matter what language they speak.

Over the years, I’ve been fortunate to receive a lot of great feedback from my students. Every review represents someone who walked away safer, more confident, and with a better understanding of their firearm than when they showed up.

At the end of the day, that’s what matters to me.

Yes, business is business, and money keeps the lights on. But I’ve never wanted my reputation to be built on titles, patches, certifications, medals, or war stories. None of that means much if the people you teach don’t actually improve.

I’d rather be known for the students I’ve helped than the things I own.

My success isn’t measured by what’s in my safe, what I drive, or what I can post online. It’s measured by whether my students leave with more confidence, a better understanding of the fundamentals, and the ability to handle their firearms safely and responsibly.

If I feel someone had a great experience, I may ask if they’d be willing to leave a review. But I’ve never begged for reviews, paid for them, or offered anything in exchange. Every review you see was written because someone felt the training was worth talking about, and I’m genuinely thankful to everyone who’s taken the time to do that.

The greatest compliment I can receive isn’t another title or certification. It’s having someone come back months or years later and tell me they’re still applying what I taught them, or hearing that the training made a real difference in their confidence and ability.

Consistency over hype. Students over ego. Safety over everything.

To everyone who’s trusted me with your training and taken the time to leave a review, thank you. Your trust means more than you know, and I’ll continue doing my best to earn it every time someone steps onto therange with me.

A lot of people treat range time the same way some people treat the gym they show up, go through the motions, and wonder why nothing changes.

If you can’t consistently call your shots at 5 yards, there’s no reason to keep pushing the target farther away. That’s like grabbing heavier weights before you’ve learned proper form. You’re not building skill you’re just making mistakes harder to diagnose.

Start where you can actually see what’s happening. Learn to call your shots. Understand why the round landed where it did. Build that connection between your eyes, your hands, and your brain.

Once you can do it consistently, add distance. Then add speed. Then add complexity.

The goal isn’t to burn through hundreds of rounds. The goal is to make every round teach you something.

Train with a purpose. Quality reps beat quantity every time.
