CARNIVAL JAB JAB is a profound traditional masquerade rooted in West African heritage, colonial resistance, and the celebration of emancipation from slavery.

ORIGINS AND MEANING OF THE NAME THE "DEVIL" LABEL:
The word "Jab" comes from the French patois diable, meaning devil (as in diable diable, or "devil devil").

COLONIAL SUBVERSION:
Enslaved Africans and their descendants were called "devils" by European colonizers who mocked or demonized Black identity and African spiritual traditions.

RECLAMATION:
Rather than practicing devil worship, freed people deliberately reclaimed the term and the imagery as satire. By "playing the devil," they inverted colonial propaganda, mocked their oppressors, and rejected European standards of respectability.

VISUALS AND RITUAL ELEMENTS BLACKENED BODIES: Masqueraders coat themselves in black oil, tar, grease, molasses, or charcoal. This symbolizes African identity, ancestral memory, and the harsh realities of plantation labor (such as working in boiling molasses vats).

CHAINS AND HORNS:
Participants wear animal horns (like goat or cow) on repurposed helmets and drag heavy chains through the streets. The chains that once signified literal bondage are transformed into powerful symbols of freedom, resistance, and survival.
