NUIT BLANCHE IS TONIGHT!!!

If you’re heading out tonight and trying to figure out where to start, we’re obviously biased… but 401 Richmond is always an EPIC Nuit Blanche stop. One building. A whole lot of art. Galleries, installations, artists, weird wonderful things happening around every corner. (and rumors have it… this year there may be aliens. )

Nuit Blanche has also given us some of our absolute favourite memories over the years.

We’ve shared SECRETS.
We’ve played with FIRE.
We’ve made videos.
We’ve eaten things.
We’ve brought WRESTLING to a fine arts institution!
It has been chaotic.
It has always been EPIC.

And one of the things we LOVEEEE most about Nuit Blanche has always been the collaborations.

From @401richmond letting us level up year after year, to the absolute insanity of Superkick’d Rock Show (@superkickd #ZombieWrestling), Artist @jacquelineshiller bringing her skills and demonstrating @cricut_ca art making x @torontoartclub , the brilliant ladies at @mazahobbies and Hobby Hop, and treats from Jazzy at @goldleafbakery_ and Making secrets float with 200+ balloons @michaelsstores .

Thank you for the magic, the years and all the GOOD STUFF.

This year, our Nuit Blanche activation is taking place privately in our living room with a 6 month old who ALSO enjoys staying up all night.
Very immersive.

We MIGHT attempt a wander at exactly 7PM before retreating back home.

I am so sad to be sharing the passing of my uncle Ted.

Ted was my dad’s best friend. They had been best friends since high school. They married sisters (Mel’s mom and her aunt) and the rest is history. I’m certain I only ever heard the filtered versions of their crazy stories, but there were a lot of stories and they were always told with laughter... hysterical laughter.

But Ted wasn’t just an uncle to me. He inspired so much of what I do.
I always knew that and I think he knew it too but over the last few days I’ve really been thinking about just how much of an impact he had on me creatively.

I must have been 10 (maybe younger), and I remember going to Ted and Betty’s home and always being surrounded by art. It was everywhere. Mixed media, unusual sculptures, things I had never seen before. Their home opened my eyes to different mediums and to the endless possibilities of what art could be.

Ted was a true artist. He could turn at something others might see as nothing and transform it into something.

The first image is one of the first paintings I can remember connecting with was made with dried acrylic paint and found objects, it was painted by their friend Cliff, and I can remember exactly where in the hallway I first saw it and how fascinated I was with it. This specific piece transformed the way I thought about art and art making.
Ted also sold my very first paintings. I was young (high school maybe… maybe even earlier )he invited me to bring some of my art to his trendy store on Queen West. He proudly hung a triptych of three BIG flower paintings in the front window. He put them up for sale and sold them either that same day or the next.

At the time, I don’t think I fully understood how significant that moment would be for me. He made the idea of actually selling art feel possible. He made being an artist feel possible. ( I WISH I had a photo of that display - I dont think I do)

I am so incredibly sad to be sharing this news.

For those who knew Ted or wish to send condolences, we are having a small service on Monday and have a GoFundMe set up to help support his wife, Elisabeth, and daughter, Natasha, as they navigate this next chapter. x by @ph1_studios

Feeling gratitude all around.

From celebrating and trying new things with the ladies at @claywithme Studios, to steaks and wine with the fam — feeling all the feelings and beyond.

Excited for this chapter of life and all the new things. Somewhere between parenting, building a *new* business, and all the fun in between… this is 41.

Feeling grateful for it all. (And proud of our little babe for somehow letting me participate in wheel throwing (note: I had low expectations on the success of this, the fact I was able to leave with TWO pieces blows my mind lol).

Progress continues!

Our studio booths are officially going up and we’re feeling all the feelings.

There’s something pretty wild about watching an idea that lived in our heads for so long start to become a real, physical place.

We’re building the kind of creative space we wish had existed … or at least, the kind of space we wish we had known existed when we needed it.

And maybe the best part? We’re already meeting some pretty incredible artists and humans along the way… and we haven’t even (officially) begun.

We’re so excited for this next chapter — not only for us, but for the creative community we hope grows inside these walls.

Toronto Art Club is coming to life, one 2x4 at a time.

“It’s not all sunshine and rainbows…”
…oh wait. Maybe it is....

From showcasing our work at the Interior Design Show, to working with DesignTO + Urbanspace Gallery, collaborating with the incredible ladies at Rock N Karma.

We have built an incredible partnership with the Village at Black Creek, and were awarded our first-ever Toronto Arts Council grant (!!) — there’s been a lot to celebrate around here. on top of that, Our urban love letter collection is 90% sold out! Life is good.

And the wild part?

This montage doesn’t even include the little project that has taken over most of our lives this year: building Toronto Art Club.

So yes, there’s been chaos. Long days. A LOT happening behind the scenes.

But there’s also been art.
Community.
New partnerships.
Opportunities.
And some pretty incredible people along the way.

Turns out… there’s been a whole lot of sunshine and we feel lucky to take a moment to celebrate that.
