𝙰𝚐𝚊𝚒𝚗𝚜𝚝 𝙽𝚊𝚝𝚞𝚛𝚎 (the big ass version of 𝒜 𝒩𝒾𝑔𝒽𝓉 𝒜𝓉 𝓉𝒽𝑒 𝐻𝑜𝓂𝑒 𝒟𝑒𝓅𝑜𝓉 𝒢𝒶𝓇𝒹𝑒𝓃 𝒞𝑒𝓃𝓉𝑒𝓇 on steroids) opens today 8/8/26 at the @ackland_art_museum until 7/11/27 for you to experience.

I’ll be back Thursday 9/10 for a formal opening (open to the public) and a conversational talk about the piece and my work with Ackland curator Lauren Turner. So if you’re in the Research Triangle area of North Carolina, come say 👋 and bless my he(art) 💚. And if we’re lucky, we can go to a frat party across the street after!

𝙰𝚐𝚊𝚒𝚗𝚜𝚝 𝙽𝚊𝚝𝚞𝚛𝚎- In Against Nature, artist Phaan Howng positions an ornate botanical composition above wainscotting that suggests the architecture of a late nineteenth-century study or parlor. The paneling’s mint green tint evokes the green interior paints used in that period, achieved through harmful additions of arsenic. Above the wainscotting, painted vinyl banners depict a jungle of barely contained foliage with spikes and fronds of neon reds, electric oranges, cerulean blues, and bruised purples.

This installation takes its name and inspiration from the 1884 novel Against Nature (À rebours) by Joris-Karl Huysmans. (French, 1848 – 1907) Chapter 8. The text focuses on the eccentric aristocratic protagonist Jean Floressas Des Esseintes’s solitary pursuit of aesthetic fulfilment. In the book’s eighth chapter, Des Esseintes purchases an enormous amount of hothouse plants for his home. In making his selections, he prizes only those species which seem to him the most unnatural. As Huysmans writes, “not one of them looked real; it was as if cloth, paper, porcelain, and metal had been lent by Man to create these monstrosities.”

Painting is dead so I chose to show this graphic novel I started in 2023 and still have yet to finish for 𝒟𝑒𝓋𝑜𝓉𝑒𝒹: 20 𝒴𝑒𝒶𝓇𝓈 𝑜𝒻 𝓉𝒽𝑒 𝑀𝒸𝑀𝒾𝓁𝓁𝒶𝓃-𝒮𝓉𝑒𝓌𝒶𝓇𝓉 𝐸𝓃𝒹𝑜𝓌𝑒𝒹 𝒞𝒽𝒶𝒾𝓇 𝒾𝓃 𝒫𝒶𝒾𝓃𝓉𝒾𝓃𝑔.

JK……exhibition curator Jeffry Cudlin was like “let’s show this!” And I was like “Hell yeah!” And then he found this awesome way to display it and I am now forever happy since it’s the first time I really ever shown drawings and unfinished work for an exhibition. But not jk to that I have still yet to complete it…someone send me money so I can do that cos whoops, I didn’t realize it would be a full time job to do so! 😂😂

But maybe it’s not meant to be completed??? 🤔🤔🤔

There’s still time to see it in person if you’re in the neighborhood before it goes back to collecting dust on a bookshelf in my studio…

I went to college and had the best time reading old letters in fancy cursive until my eyes bled, scanned a bunch of old letters written by botanists in the 1800’s, joined a frat, hung out with Carol Ann and learned about dot maps in the herbarium, went to my first college football game, played corn hole one time, talked about my art a lot, got a lot of steps in, botanized a bit, lived in a semi-haunted hotel that doesn’t give you free breakfast for 5 days but is very conveniently located and the bartender there makes the best martinis…and now I am mentally, socially, and physically exhausted AF.

Thank you @ackland_art_museum for giving me the best @uncchapelhill college maxxing experience ever! Now I want to be a Tar Heel foreverrrrrrrrrrr!

𝒜𝑔𝒶𝒾𝓃𝓈𝓉 𝒩𝒶𝓉𝓊𝓇𝑒 is on view till July next year and is the best place to hang out on campus.

The Ackland welcomes back faculty, students, and staff to campus with a celebration for its newest installation in the ART& space, Phaan Howng: Against Nature.

In Against Nature, artist Phaan Howng positions an ornate botanical composition above wainscotting that suggests the architecture of a late nineteenth-century study or parlor. The paneling’s mint green tint evokes the green interior paints used in that period, achieved through harmful additions of arsenic. During the evening, we will be celebrating with non-alcoholic drinks and snacks. Phaan will be present during the evening to mingle with attendees. Around 6:15 PM, she will briefly introduce the artwork and answer any questions.

Join us for an evening honoring Phaan and welcoming the installation to our community, as well as starting off the semester in a fun way!

We ask for folks to RSVP to give us a headcount for the event. No ticket purchase is required.
