From the Summer 2026 print edition: Phanésia Pharel, a Haitian American playwright and screenwriter from Miami, made her Off-Broadway debut earlier this year at WP Theater with her play THE WATERFALL. Her play DEAD GIRL'S QUINCEAÑERA will play from August 5-29 at Barrington Stage Company in a co-production with Goodman Theatre and Hartford Stage. Thank you Jamie publicity manager @goodmantheatre for doing everything in your power to make sure our community knows this play is happening. Behind every play is a hundred people working to make it happen.

I had a blast with my artistic soulmate Melia, a mexican and jewish woman discussing the play on @wgntv !

Gabriela Furtado Coutinho makes friends with the DEAD GIRL’S QUINCEAÑERA team, a new play by @phanesiapharel about a missing persons investigation led by 15-year-old Latinas in Miami, which she describes as “explosive, full of unprecedented evidence in girl genius and the honesty of my lived experience.” A co-production between @goodmantheatre, @hartfordstage, and @barringtonstage, this rolling world premiere has us in our feels about adolescent friendship, resilience, and power. As the protagonists would say… “PERIODDDD!” by @phanesiapharel

Dead Girl’s Quinceañera
@goodmantheatre
•
Dead Girl’s Quinceañera is a celebration of the power and perseverance of young women. Maria has gone missing from her own quinceañera and her friends have decided it is their sole purpose to figure out what happened to their friend. Inspired by their love for Maria and all things true crime, these teenage girls do what teenage girls do best- figure out what their best friend is going through. It is a mystery, but even more it is a love letter to the bonds young women form that are strongest when they’re under pressure.
•
This play manages to blend the dark and the light so well. The audience was laughing so loud at times, but was absolutely silent and locked in at other times. We went on a journey with these girls as they showed their brave sides and their soft sides, as they went through valleys of doubt and peaks of self-belief- the journey anyone who has been a teenage girl can understand.
•
Dead Girl’s Quinceañera is a beautiful play and I’m so glad to see a show centering young Latina women being done in a theater like the Goodman. It is playing through November 1st! Don’t miss it! And make sure you come back this week to hear from my chat with playwright @phanesiapharel !

“To thine own self be true” is an oft use phrase, but its essence rings true for @arianaburks . It’s what she continues to lean on to success in show business. Hear more of her wisdom on S3 E19 - Dead Girl’s Quinceanera with guests Ariana Burks and @phanesiapharel dropping Monday, Ocotber 5th!

We learned a lot from @phanesiapharel about the blind submission process that the O'Neill Theater Center has in place when vetting new works. Hear all about it in this clip from S3 E19 - Dead Girl's Quinceanera with guests Phanesia Pharel and @arianaburks, dropping Monday, October 5th!
