Hunter Doohan is joining one of horror’s most brutal franchises.

After his breakout performance in the harrowing thriller series ‘Your Honor’, the 32-year-old American actor has cut his teeth playing villains in ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ and ‘Wednesday’, Netflix’s smash-hit series that introduced the actor to audiences around the globe. He keeps joking he should take on lighter roles, especially now that he’s found himself at the heart of an ‘Evil Dead’ movie.

In our Issue 5 cover story, the ‘Evil Dead Burn’ star discusses how producer Sam Raimi has kept his 45-year-old franchise fresh, why queer audiences have a special connection with horror, and the skills he learned from Tim Burton and Jenna Ortega to prepare him for the role.

‘Evil Dead Burn’ is in cinemas from July 10th in the US and from July 9th in the UK.

2027 will see both Neon and A24 release horror films based on the SCP Foundation.

Months after A24 announced ‘V/H/S: SCP’, Neon has revealed it is developing its own movie based on the SCP Foundation, a collaborative online horror writing project. The studio has stressed that their film will be released under the Creative Commons license CC BY-SA, after the SCP Foundation Wiki denounced the A24 film for allegedly disregarding this license.

Aside from representing a clash between two of the biggest indie film studios, the competing SCP Foundation films are a testament to the value of internet horror IP after the colossal success of Kane Parsons’ ‘Backrooms’.

A Trixie Mattel Halloween album was long overdue. The famed TV personality, known for winning the third season of ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars’, hosting the hit podcast ‘The Bald and the Beautiful’ with fellow drag queen Katya Zamolodchikova, and running her own makeup brand Trixie Cosmetics, has funnelled her lifelong love of horror into six morbidly romantic songs filled with 80s horror synths, acoustic guitars, and even the theremin. Moreover, she’s launching the album with a star-packed Halloween special informed by the self-referential fun of films like ‘Scream’.

Mattel sat down with Phantasmag to discuss how ‘Till Death Do Us Part’ began as an at-home project, the “crisis of faith” that inspired the poppy yet melancholic lead single, and getting “the A-list of the A-list Halloween divas” to cameo in the special.

‘Till Death Do Us Part’ is out now. Mattel’s Halloween performance special launches on her YouTube channel on October 5th.

Happy Halloween month!

With the spookiest time of the year in full swing, October is bringing an exciting line-up of genre films (‘Clayface’, ‘Other Mommy’, ‘V/H/S/Mixtape’) and an abundance of horror TV shows (Mike Flanagan’s ‘Carrie’ reimagining, the Josh Hartnett-led sea monster series ‘Below’, and the long-awaited ‘Friday the 13th’ prequel ‘Crystal Lake’).

Plus, Austin Abrams is caught in another disastrous predicament after ‘Resident Evil’ with survival horror ‘Whalefall’, classics ‘Pan’s Labyrinth’, ‘The Devils’, and ‘Dracula’ (1958) return to cinemas with new restorations, and Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson, and Josh Hartnett get caught up in a twisted love triangle in psychological thriller ‘Verity’.

Jennifer Lawrence will lead Zach Cregger’s ‘The Flood’.

The Oscar-winning actress has boarded the ‘Weapons’ writer-director’s next film after ‘Resident Evil’, which is currently playing in theatres and has grossed an impressive $200 million worldwide.

Cregger has described the upcoming sci-fi thriller as a “disturbing” film with similarities to Stanley Kubrick’s classic ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’.

Lawrence has another genre film on the way in Martin Scorsese’s Gothic psychological horror ‘What Happens at Night’, and can next be seen reprising her iconic role as Katniss Everdeen in ‘The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping’.

The Japanese posters for ‘Clayface’ tease a body horror thrill ride from DC Studios.

Centring the titular Batman villain from DC Comics, ‘Clayface’ follows a desperate actor named Matt Hagen (Tom Rhys Harries) who, after an accident, undergoes an experimental cosmetic procedure with the help of Dr. Caitlyn Corr (Naomi Ackie). While it initially seems to be a success, the terrifying side effects send Matt over the edge as he embarks on a revenge-fuelled spiral.

The third film in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Universe after ‘Superman’ and ‘Supergirl’, ‘Clayface’ was pitched by Mike Flanagan (‘The Haunting of Hill House’). The horror auteur couldn’t direct the film due to scheduling conflicts, but fellow horror filmmaker James Watkins (‘Eden Lake’, ‘Black Mirror’, ‘Speak No Evil’) has stepped in.

‘Clayface’ is playing in US and UK cinemas from October 23rd. by @phantasmagpress
