Today is a day you’ve been waiting for for a long time, but it’s finally here! From the moment you told me that you wanted to switch your major to Interior Design, you had my full support. At first, you had doubts that you could really consider yourself as, or see yourself as an artist, but I had seen your artistic instincts and creativity at work far before you became a designer. From the drawings that you thought “weren’t good,” to the way you subconsciously color match everything you own, and even in how you decorated your first dorm room. Once you had decided that Interior Design at VCU was for you, I watched you work your way through various programs and colleges acquiring the skills/prerequisites you needed to fight your way into the VCUarts department all on your own; I had never seen anyone with such will power and determination before. Even when it was time to declare for the BFA program itself and they told you it would be an additional 3 years on top of the 3 you had already spent in college; you persevered. You knew what you wanted. Your work ethic, your creative prowess, your eye for design, and your passion are what have made me the proudest husband in the world watching you for those 3 years in the Interior Design Program. Seeing you learn CAD software, grow your Revit skills, enhance your rendering skills, and hammer out project after project, and design after design has been one of the greatest honors of my life. And it’s all of this hard work that has now paid off, not only in the form of a degree as a first generation scholar, but also in a Design award honoring your incredible Senior Thesis Project (Picture #6). I can’t encapsulate my admiration for you in mere words, so I won’t attempt to, but I will tell you, AND THE WORLD, that I am and always will be proud of you; your accomplishments and your success.
