I’m so happy for all of them, I just wish we were all graduating together!

The reason I chose this format was to hopefully get published during my PhD, instead I should be able to submit my papers to journals in the interim between thesis submission and viva. It’s not what I planned, but the format will make it easier!

I LOVE my research area, but I want to explore other issues within it! We’ve had so many more international tournaments since 2022!

I don’t enjoy teaching (maybe if I was teaching in my area it would be different but I haven’t had the opportunity), so really I just want to research and that is very rare!

My supervisor has always told me not to worry about what comes next until I’m there… we’re now getting close. I have no issue getting a stop gap job that’s completely outside academia, but I would miss research if I can’t find anything related eventually. by @phdw.me

🍂OCTOBER STIPEND BUDGETING🍂

I was inspired by @lifewithalyce to share how I’m budgeting my PhD stipend in October! I will be unemployed come March next year and have been trying to save for when that happens.

Most UK PhD funding only lasts until you click submit, which means between submitting, viva, and corrections, you’re on your own financially. In an ideal world I don’t have to get a job until I get my corrections, but we will see if that’s doable or not closer to the time 🫠

I’m very gratful to have had a stipend during my PhD, and I appreciate that living in Sheffield has made it go further than it would in many other places. I also live in a house with 2 other people, which means major bills are split 3 ways and meals can be shared. I think I’ve probably underestimated for travel as I’ve forgotten how dark and cold it gets and the student ticket is only minimally cheaper than the usual, so I’ll adjust that if necessary ❄️

Have I missed anything I should be budgeting for?

⏳PHD WORKING HOURS⏳

The song felt really relevant… My first week back was filled with admin and editing. I definitely started the week off stronger than I finished it, but we go again next week!

Breakdown:
Chapter Editing: 11hrs 30m
Admin: 4hrs 30m
Mandarin: 3hrs
Meeting: 1hr

TOTAL: 20hrs

If you’re new here, quick disclaimer: my research is all laptop based so I don’t have to rely on experiments that can go wrong and my hours aren’t lab based. My hours stick around the ~20hr mark and my supervisor is supportive of this as long as all my work is getting done! It’s not doable for everyone, but it works for me. Come deadline season I will work more, it just depends what’s on that week.
