The Earth is not Empty

@afrikanliberationhub 's event on Wednesday 23rd September 2026 where we gathered @27boxes in Melville, Johannesburg to mark the Afrikan New Year and the spring equinox, tapping into our past, present and future and the room made it everything it was.

African liberation refers to the monumental historical, political, and socio-cultural movements aimed at freeing the continent from European colonial rule, foreign exploitation, and white supremacy. It encompasses the mid-20th-century anti-colonial push, the ongoing struggle against neo-colonialism, and the continuous effort to achieve Pan-African unity and economic sovereignty.

🌍 The Historical Timeline of Liberation
The process of African decolonization accelerated dramatically following World War II, fueled by a collective rejection of the artificial borders and forced labor systems established during the 1884 Berlin Conference.

✊Modern Challenges & Second-Wave Liberation:
While every country on the continent is now independent, contemporary movements emphasize that political independence was only the first step.

Modern African liberation focuses heavily on Combating Neo-Colonialism: Breaking away from restrictive diplomatic strings, economic exploitation, and the raw looting of domestic natural resources by foreign powers.

Democratic Accountability: Overcoming the pitfalls of "first-wave" liberation parties that concentrated power within political elites, shifting the focus instead to strong constitutional institutions.

Grassroots Pan-Africanism: Initiatives like @afrikanliberationhub network spearhead "African Liberation Week" to re-imagine continental unity driven directly by local communities and ordinary citizens rather than just governments.

Global Solidarity: Deep historical and ongoing alignments with other international anti-colonial struggles, notably showing persistent solidarity with Palestinian liberation movements.

Inzalo yeLanga African New Year

The African New Year is widely recognized on 23 September, it symbolizes equal day and night, the birth of the sun, and the balancing of natural energies aligning directly with the Spring Equinox in the Southern Hemisphere. Rather than relying on the Gregorian calendar, indigenous African traditions observe lunisolar and agricultural cycles that track the transition from the dry winter to the fertile rainy season. This period represents rebirth, purification, and spiritual realignment with nature. Because Africa is a continent of immense cultural diversity, "New Year" timelines and traditions naturally vary depending on regional agricultural cycles and celestial markers:

Inzalo yeLanga (Mpumalanga, South Africa): Celebrated on 23 September, this convergence is centered around what is said to be the world's oldest solar stone calendar (Adam's Calendar). It marks the rising of the Sirius star at dawn, serving as a sacred site for spiritual renewal and honoring ancestral wisdom.

Selemo sa Basotho (Free State & Lesotho): The Basotho New Year begins earlier, on 1 August (the month of Phato). Known for its sweeping winds that clear "Mother Earth," it is celebrated with cultural performances, horse parades, and Mokete wa lewa—a feast offering the first harvest to God and the ancestors.

uMandulo (Zulu Calendar): The Zulu traditional year starts with the new moon of September (uMandulo). It divides the year into 13 lunar months based on precise observations of nature, guiding the community on when to cultivate the soil.

Enkutatash (Ethiopia): Moving to East Africa, the Ethiopian New Year is observed on 11 September (or 12 September in leap years). It marks the end of heavy rains, where children dress in new clothes, dance through villages, and pass out yellow daisies, symbolizing fertility and fresh starts.

Yoruba (Nigeria): Festivals like the Odún Ifá are observed to mark spiritual renewal and ask for blessings for the upcoming agricultural cycle.

Heritage Month

Heritage in South Africa is a vast and deeply emotional tapestry that spans the very origins of humanity, ancient African civilisations, a turbulent struggle for liberation, and a vibrant, modern multi-cultural identity. Fondly known as the "Rainbow Nation," South Africa’s approach to its heritage is unique because it blends incredible natural landscapes and archaeological treasures with "living heritage"—the oral histories, traditions, music, and diverse culinary customs of its people.

Every year, the country dedicates the month of September to Heritage Month, culminating in a national public holiday on Heritage Day on 24 September. This day serves as a vehicle for nation-building and reconciliation, encouraging citizens to showcase their roots through traditional attire, music, and communal gatherings, often centered around a traditional braai (barbecue).

Living & Intangible Heritage: Since the transition to democracy in 1994, South African heritage laws changed to recognise that identity isn't just about static stone monuments. It lives through ordinary people.

Languages & Philosophy: The country recognises 12 official languages, backed by the foundational philosophy of Ubuntu—the deeply embedded belief that "a person is a person through other people".

Food & Texture: Local heritage is tasted everyday through distinct dishes like Durban's Bunny Chow, Cape Malay curries, bestervele (biltong), and the vibrant patterns of Shweshwe fabric.

Creative Expression: Heritage is heard in the evolutionary sounds of South African music—from indigenous Zulu isicathamiya and township jazz to the modern global electronic waves of Amapiano.

iMbokodo
In English, the literal meaning of "imbokodo"
(an Nguni word from isiZulu and isiXhosa) is
a grinding stone or a rock.

Metaphorically, it represents the unwavering
strength, resilience, and power of women.
The word represents someone who is
unmovable, enduring, and tough under
pressure.

The Famous Saying
'Wathint' abafazi, wathint' imbokodo!"
translates to "You strike a woman, you
strike a rock!"

This phrase became a famous battle cry
during the 1956 historic march of 20,000
South African women protesting
apartheid pass laws.
Today, it symbolizes the courage, power,
and unyielding spirit of women.

Pheelin Xpress today reminds us to be softer towards ourselves, be more kind and mindful.
Allow Love, and become a Diamond.

Main Street Sundays is BACK!

Following the success of the Garden Activation on 12 April 2026 @Exotically Divine in collaboration with @jozi_my_jozi and @sadiebistro, we're excited to return on 21 June 2026 for a hands-on Compost & Waste Management Activation as part of Environmental Month.

This winter, we're encouraging communities to
rethink waste and discover how fallen leaves can be transformed into nutrient-rich compost that feeds our gardens, improves soil health, and helps keep our air clean.

Activities include:
🍂Composting demonstrations
🪱 Worm farming and soil building
🌿 Herb planting and harvesting
🌳 Tree care and environmental awareness
🛖 Community gardening and nature connection.

📍Main Street Sundays
🗓 21 June 2026
⏰️10:00 AM

Registration is free, and important on @jozi_my_jozi bio: it helps keep the event safe, manage numbers on the street, plan enough activities and facilities, and show the city and partners how much Jozi wants more open car-free streets

When you register, you also get event updates,
programme highlights, and any important info you need before the day.

Which part of Main Street Sundays are you most excited for this time - the food, the music, the kids' zone, or just strolling a car-free Jozi street?
