Snippets from my performance & conversation last Saturday @humberstreetgallery in front of my two-channel video installation "Ö Engine - island engine" Had a great conversation between myself and @davew65 about the work and development of this residency. More to come soon.

Thanks also to @lauren_emily_wilson for supporting the work to grow 🌱 and thanks to the collaborators along the way @meliberney @tamilimit @micaela.pb @jezrileyfrench & Isaac Maxwell 🍓

Some of the things I've been thinking about during my residency @humberstreetgallery is a desire to keep exploring different forms of projection and ways of performing to / with live audiences. I’ve enjoyed having a large space to be playful in, experimenting further with blurring boundaries between performance, installation, sound, text and music as objects and materials.
Thinking about islands & repetition.

The show will be up and running from: aprox 10th July 2026.

Sharing & Performance: 18th July 2026. (This is a free event)

Space 2 - Holding Space - (Second floor of Humber Street Gallery)

"Ö Engines - Island Engines” explores the systems that make an island; it's “engines”. Islands are approached here as living, interconnected worlds in which multiple layers of relation coexist. These include marine processes such as tides, currents, diatom activity and other aquatic life; terrestrial and material conditions such as rocks, moss, and weather; and human and more-than-human presences including radio-towers, boat engines, ants, movement, and memory.

A key focus of the work is the role islands play in supporting marine microbial life, particularly diatoms, microscopic algae that contribute significantly to global photosynthesis. Responsible for producing an estimated 20% of the planet’s oxygen, roughly one in every five breaths, these organisms form the foundation of complex marine ecosystems. Through the installation, Phoebe seeks to communicate the delicacy and significance of these often-unseen systems, inviting curiosity about their presence and influence in the world. The work reflects on how perception shifts when we are situated within the context of island landscapes, and how practices of listening, attentiveness, and curiosity can become ways of understanding ecological relationships and our place within them.

The installation series continues from Pheobe’s previous work, Vegetal Empathy, a performative installation that explored the concept of speculative gardens and the ways in which we curate and shape nature. Building on these investigations, “Ö Engine - Island Engine" expands the scale of inquiry, shifting from the structured environment of the garden to the broader ecology of the island. by @pheobelaw

At 6:30pm - we go for a run with installation artist Pheobe riley Law in a piece originally created for Semi Silent’s ‘Sonic Future Residencies’ series.
Sound:run:brea(d)th originated in a series of daily sound-runs undertaken by the artist, who approached each new location as a brief but attentive encounter. Moving through each environment at running pace, they listened to the rhythms of the place alongside the rhythm of their own breath, before later returning to experience the same spaces more slowly and attentively.
Alongside these sonic explorations, Pheobe filmed with an old, low-resolution camcorder while moving through both indoor and outdoor environments. Encounters with people, unexpected electronic pulses, and small, resonant everyday objects became points of attention—elements whose overlooked sonic qualities the work seeks to bring into focus.
The artist conceived Sound:run:brea(d)th as a kind of theatre: a space of multiple, continuously shifting scenes in which things are uncovered only to become covered again. The work brings together field recordings from public squares and architectural spaces with the inner sounds of locally grown fruit, soil from an apartment garden, plant roots and branches, a milk vending machine along the Bega River, and bird deterrent devices, creating a layered sonic landscape in which the everyday unfolds as performance. by @pheobelaw

we're pleased to announce that booking is now open for;

murmuration # 8 - gathering of listeners - sensing liminality

14th - 21st May 2027

with

JEZ RILEY FRENCH
PHEOBE RILEY LAW

& guest artists (tba)

+ private chef

Bràghaid Albann, Scotland

for more information see;

https://jezrileyfrench.co.uk/murmuration-2027.php

The cost includes 7 nights accommodation, with full catering by our private chef & access to all group activities, talks and practical demonstrations.

Alongside listening sessions and field recording in the locale, we'll explore different approaches to placing sounds within other spaces, re-listening, composing and editing located sound, and sensing liminality as material for other formats inc. graphic / text based scores. We will also explore via extended techniques using contact microphones, ecoutic microphones, hydrophones etc.

The 8th in a series of unique trips curated to ensure both a sharing of diverse experience and knowledge of sound, situation and place, and an atmosphere that is relaxed, inspiring, inclusive and open. Each trip is led by artists working at the forefront of their respective fields, to compliment our always fascinating group of participants.

Our theme for the 2027 trip is sensing liminality - focusing on how we can re-evaluate the limits of our experience of spaces and situations that we often consider to be between others. By shifting our attention, alongside developments in both technology and approaches to situated listening, new possibilities push the borders of our perception, and in turn our connection to place.

For the 2027 trip we're also venturing to a new location in the remarkable landscape of the Bràghaid Albann region of Scotland.

Our trips build communities of listeners in a flexible week together. Doing this differently we react, individually and as a group, to the ever changing environment at the time, with practical sessions, skill sharing sessions, talks and multiple additional discussions that develop to fit the interests of the group.

Pheobe Riley Law × Tam Lin

For FAF, installation artist and sound practitioner Pheobe Riley Law collaborates with interdisciplinary artist and musician Tam Lin on a live performance exploring the sounds of the vegetal and the more-than-human.

Drawing from Pheobe’s projects Vegetal Empathy and The Sound of Food, the performance will use contact and ecoutic microphones to amplify and manipulate vegetal soundscapes, combining field recordings and tonal material into an immersive live composition.

Tam Lin will respond through modular synthesis and sampled sounds, processing and expanding the live audio in real time.

A playful exploration of listening, technology, food and our entanglement with the non-human.

Live at FAF — Saturday 5 September, 8:30pm
Ladbroke Hall, London

🥣 The Sound of Food

What does food sound like?

The Sound of Food is a film by Meli Berney @meliberney and Pheobe Riley Law @pheobelaw that explores the hidden soundscapes, memories and micro-ecologies that surround the way we eat.

The project began with an open call, inviting people to share a personal memory, a sound and a recipe that held special meaning for them. In return, each participant received someone else’s story and recipe, with the invitation to recreate their meal — creating a cycle of shared experiences, memories and food.

The project came to life through communal meals at Kupfer Gallery, London, where people prepared and shared food together. These encounters were documented through sound and film, resulting in The Sound of Food — an 8:34-minute film that listens to food not simply as something we consume, but as a way of connecting with people, places and memories.

Alongside the film, Meli and Pheobe created a publication, gathering the stories and recipes that emerged along the way.

🎧 At FAF, we’ll be screening The Sound of Food and exploring the intimate connections that form around what — and how — we eat.
