Heritage Day is also about the history of our sound. Who’s album is a no skip classic? My pick is “Zabalaza” by @thandiswamazwai this I’ve heard on road trips since 2006 all the way to playing it of my own volition. It’s such a beautiful homecoming that’s aged incredibly well. Any rainy day calls for “Mvula” by @langamav ☔️🥹 Ahead of his sold-out “Return To Love” shows a few months back at @untitledbasement I got to sit with the award winning singer-songwriter and composer to find out where it all began.

This next instalment of Music Behind the Musician became a chance to gush over R&B, think through lessons from therapy and revel in how he’s made it to The Other Side of grief and love lost. The pitter-patter of rain is felt like an excuse to revisit his soulful voice all over again. “The weather always finds itself in the music,” he recalled. Born Nkosinathi Mavuso to parents Pius Mavuso and Thandi Langa, who sang in Orlando Choir, it’s no surprise that his youth was spent at choir competitions that ignited his own passion. I’ve seen Langa take to stage numerous times and I’m always left in awe. He truly is a student of music, taking the lessons from the @nsaartschool and UCT Music School to hone his craft into the penmanship and performance we see today.

The full episode is on my TikTok linked in my bio ✨ stay tuned for #MelodyMondays next week and catch Langa’s latest single “I Choose You” is almost out but Therapy is everywhere you listen to music.

The history of South Africans and bossanova runs deep 🇧🇷🫶🏾😮‍💨 today’s playlist explores how often it’s influenced and been infused with our own sounds to create something light and Latin-inspired. This is undoubtedly one of my favourite genres and I loved getting to explore it from a local context. 30 Days of #MelodyMondays officially comes to a close. Huge s/o to @nique_sithole @boy_im_too_mellow @ntombenhleshezi for adding some lovely songs for the challenge. The playlist link is in my bio and drop your favourite bossa song ✨

Women in male dominated fields 🎺 >

It’s been a joy to witness more women playing instruments and singing their faces off, especially in jazz. Tell me who to add ✨

African Pop is more expansive than people think 🙂‍↕️🎶 While pop is a genre of its own, our interpretation lies in the idea of popular music. To South Africans, we moved from mbaqanga to bubblegum pop in the 80s, kwaito and house in the 90s, the influence of R&B in the 90s, EDM and European house in the 2010s and so the story goes. Our ears are influenced by so many sounds. This #melodymondays was an exploration of pop is interpreted by artists like @tyla @umzulu.phaqa today. The playlist is linked in my bio ✨

1/30 Days of #MelodyMondays starts now 🎶🥰
Day 1 is “Song That’s Live” and I couldn’t resist talking about @untitledbasement I’ve lost count of how many shows I’ve seen here from Zoë Modiga in her Yellow era to @yussefdayes and Venna and so many artists inbetween. What @therealdjkenzhero @theglobalist and Sfiso created is really incredible.

Live music is where the notes take on a new perspective and in that room, we get to be a part of the magic. Drop a song you’ve loved hearing live and let’s keep supporting local acts and spaces keeping music alive.

Artists shown: @thando_zide @kokorokomusic @langamav @thebelegend @mamosadikb @internetathi @thesnproject @officialmanana
