I’ve already done some pre launch interviews which I hope you will enjoy.

First up was People Hidden in History with Kathleen Langone and whilst Marilyn Monroe isn’t exactly forgotten (and the celebrations around the centenary of her birth this year have gone to show there is still so much interest in her) there is still a lot to reveal about how she handled her career and her life.

Check out @phihpod for my episode and do check out all the other wonderful episodes as well. by @phihpod

Amalia Kussner painted the women who ruled Gilded Age society , but today, almost no one knows her name.

Amalia was a miniature painter from Indiana who arrived in New York City in 1892 with one goal: to become a recognized artist and gain entry into the highest circles of Gilded Age society.

Her miniature portraits were often no larger than 3 by 5 inches, yet they brought her remarkable access. After a brief stint creating miniatures at Tiffany’s, Kussner struck out on her own and soon found herself painting women like Mrs. Astor and Alva Vanderbilt. She became known not only for her technical skill, but for the way she portrayed her wealthy female sitters, draped in translucent tulle, with low necklines and their finest jewels on full display.

And Kussner understood something that many artists overlook: talent could get you noticed, but knowing how to market yourself could get you into the room.

Her reputation eventually crossed the Atlantic. She painted King Edward VII and the Czar and Czarina of Russia, and created nearly 200 portraits during her lifetime.

Then came a mysterious marriage, a dramatic lawsuit in 1901, and eventually, her disappearance from the story of American art. Amalia Kussner is exactly the kind of artist I mean when I talk about the forgotten women of art history.

Her story is now being brought back to life in, The Miniature Painter Revealed, by Kathleen Langone @phihpod

Save this one because I have a feeling you’re going to be hearing Amalia Kussner’s name a lot more. by @phihpod
