This has become my most-read and most-shared Substack essay to date by a wide margin, which lets me know it touched something a lot of people have been trying to find words for. My hope isn’t that you agree with every sentence. My hope is that you can listen for the intention beneath the words and the question I’m asking, rather than reading it through the lens of offense or assumption. Some ideas aren’t meant to make us comfortable. They’re meant to make us pause long enough to consider a perspective we may have never considered before. If you choose to listen, thank you. I don’t have the capacity to make a caption about how much of an epiphany this is. It feels like the last puzzle piece that fell into place and explains everything on every level. I have over a thousand hours of videos and thoughts recorded and none of them feel as profound as this one. If it doesn’t make sense….. gimme a min because this is worthy of a full book. It’s that big of a deal, to me. I know I’m going to get pushback and all the diverging thoughts and theories, I welcome them. I just ask kindly that you approach with curiosity and not surface level thinking on the topic, I promise I spend a tremendous amount of time and brain capacity thinking about these things in ways that make me nauseous and feel crazy at times. This is a working theory I can’t articulate perfectly right now, but I really am going to make this a book. I think Miss Rachel accidentally taught me something about politics. We have made the world so complicated that sometimes people feel like they need a history degree, a law degree, an economics degree, and a 47-slide PowerPoint before they’re allowed to say, “But what about the children?” And maybe that’s the problem. What if we had a political party called For Littles? Not left. Not right. Not pretending disagreement disappears. Just forcing every argument to eventually answer one question: How does this affect the children? Housing. Healthcare. War. Education. Prisons. Wages. Work-life balance. Food. Everything. Because children don’t choose their country, their religion, their parents, their economic circumstances, or any of the histories adults inherit and then continue fighting over. I’ve been watching the way Miss Rachel keeps bringing complicated conversations back to children, and I think there’s something much bigger in what she’s doing. Maybe we don’t need another complicated political philosophy. Maybe we need to remember who all of this shit is supposed to eventually be for. For Littles. New piece. Divorces and separations usually lead to extended time away from one parent or both. I can’t explain how joyful and grateful I am for that season of extended separation to be over and to know the love and relationship I have with my children is still intact. My children are such an Important and integral part of who I am and what my purpose in life is. Despite despite despite…. Black achievement and Black Excellence are not the same thing. And neither of them is necessarily Black Power. We have spent generations celebrating our ability to enter institutions we do not control, rise within systems we did not create, receive their recognition, and call that progress. But I think we have to ask a harder question: What is all of our brilliance actually building? Representation is not power. Recognition is not power. Access is not power. Prestige is not power.
