There’s a romance to Carmen Estate that’s hard to separate from the coffee itself.

Planted high in Paso Ancho at 1,900 metres, Carmen Estate’s Geisha spent its first few years struggling against the cold and wind. By 2013, there was finally enough fruit to taste it properly, and the promise was already there.

Thirteen years later, those same trees are producing something extraordinary.

Grown in rich volcanic soil and slowly processed by Jean Paul Langenstein, this natural Geisha is overflowing with tropical fruit while holding onto everything that makes the variety so beautiful: perfume, clarity and elegance. taken in Calgary, Alberta by @philandseb

One of the hardest founder lessons is realizing the problem isn’t always the person who left — sometimes it’s the system you built.

After investing six months into training people only to watch them walk away, the real mistake became clear: there was no structure, no commitment, and no reason for them to stay.

So the training process had to change from the ground up.

Good founders don’t just blame the outcome. They fix the system that created it.

If you’ve been drinking our Panama coffees, you already know Ratibor Hartmann. Well. Now meet his daughter.

Yessie is a fourth-generation coffee farmer and agronomist. Together with her husband Jean Paul, she runs Gato Grande, a young farm high in Los Pozos, planted inside native forest.
They are obsessive about the details. Jean Paul, for example doesn’t stop fermentation by the clock, he stops it by aroma. He’s locked in.

They’ve produced a delicate and layered coffee here, with nectarine, white grape, watermelon, oolong tea and buckwheat honey.
