This came through the post this morning so I thought I’d share some images - A signed Love Games promo 12”. Signed by Mark King #markkinglevel42 , #markking , Mike Lindup #mikelindup , Phil Gould #philgould and Boon. There’s also a Leroy Williams (percussion)signature. It also interestingly has a John Gould/Mark King London address (57, Rowfant Road, Balham SW17) There’s also John Gould’s home and work (MCA records) telephone numbers. We’ve gone all in with this, the first release on our label. It’s the record we wanted to own, created the way we wanted it. From the moment we spoke to Mark King about it back in January he couldn’t have been more enthusiastic and supportive. After that there was no stopping us.

We’ve always loved David Corio’s iconic London photography of the band and are delighted he agreed to allow us to use it. The record is a thing of beauty as a result. Thanks @david.corio 💛

Many of you asked us for coloured vinyl and we thought why not do black and yellow vinyl in the same set? And not just any old yellow. Record two is pressed on our Coalface yellow wax.

We toiled over putting text on the cover. In the end we couldn’t do it. It was perfect already. So, we went for a removable obi strip, which wraps around the spine. The record comes in a clear readable bag too.

Removing the obi reveals David’s photo in full. The full gatefold sleeve is enhanced and protected by a premium layer of matt lamination. The final rear cover (this isn’t it) features a short essay by Coalface’s Paul Waller, a Level 42 archivist and fan.

Opening the gatefold reveals another of David’s incredible images. Record one is pressed on black vinyl and record two on Coalface yellow vinyl.

Gilles Peterson has very kindly written sleeve notes for the release. Gilles has a concise collection of Brit funk music and was a fan of the band since 1980. His first free promo as a DJ in his teens was ‘Sandstorm’, the opening track on this record.

We spoke to all original band members and they shared their thoughts and memories of the instrumental tracks featured on the album. John Gould, brother of Phil and Boon supplied unique photographs he took of the band in their formative years, when he was their manager.

With so many of David Corio’s photos at our disposal, including this striking portrait of Mark King, there was no way we were using plain inner sleeves!

I’m very happy to finally announce ‘Forty Two’ by Level 42. The debut release from Coalface Records. This is a true labour of love for me and I couldn’t be more proud to finally share it with you all. It brings together the finest instrumental recordings from Level 42’s incredible early Brit Funk period, drawing from the 1980-82 albums and 12” single B-sides for the first time on vinyl.
