A glacier collapse.

Initially, Nepal’s foreign minister said the floods were likely caused by an earthquake that had destabilized rocks and ice, setting off a landslide. But that explanation was soon ruled out. Investigations by geological authorities instead revealed that a massive glacier had collapsed.

The Greenland Ice Sheet has now been shrinking for 30 consecutive years, with the threat of an eventual collapse looming ahead.

Overall, the Greenland Ice Sheet lost approximately 173 billion tonnes of ice during the 2025/2026 melt year. This alone corresponds to nearly half a millimetre of global sea-level rise in a single year.

The latest IPCC report indicates that the Greenland Ice Sheet’s tipping point could be reached at a global temperature increase of 2–3°C above pre-industrial levels, and it is considered quite likely that this threshold could be crossed before the end of the century.

Containing enough ice to raise global sea levels by about seven metres, the ice sheet could, even without a full-scale collapse, contribute enormous amounts of water to the oceans at current melting rates.

Hypothesis: Polarization and historical disinformation as an indirect driving force behind NVE.

The Political Tech Companies

When a society’s history is systematically distorted through false narratives and persistent political disinformation campaigns, it can undermine citizens’ trust in shared facts, institutions, and the ability of the adult world to create coherence and meaning. Climate misinformation could also be mentioned in this context.

Young and vulnerable people in particular may experience increasing cynicism, alienation, and distrust of societal norms and authorities. This erosion of trust does not in itself create violent extremism, but it can act as an underlying accelerator for nihilistic violent extremist (NVE) environments, which thrive on experiences of meaninglessness, chaos, and social fragmentation. At the same time, the polarization promoted by disinformation campaigns may indirectly serve political interests by weakening social cohesion and making populations more receptive to conflict-oriented worldviews.

What can be done?

EU-based, politically independent social media platforms should be established. These platforms should be owned and operated by nonprofit organizations and be subject to modern, democratically anchored EU regulation.

Big Tech companies are increasingly exercising direct political power within the European Union.

Through extensive and sustained lobbying, strategic partnerships with public and private actors, and the creation of structural technological dependencies, they systematically influence legislative processes, regulatory frameworks, and public opinion formation for their own benefit.

This development represents a genuine erosion of democratic decision-making space, as commercial platforms no longer function merely as infrastructures for political communication, but as powerful actors that actively shape the institutional and normative frameworks to which they themselves are subject. by @philipjohnsen

Tax the wealthy!

Democracy and the rule of law tend to serve those with wealth, while poorer people—at home, across the EU, and around the world—bear the burden.

This creates unrest.
This creates desperation.
This forces people to flee.

We now face a hostile United States with ambitions of global dominance. Its logic is driven by power: control over supply chains, labor markets, and political decision-making worldwide, including within the EU.

We should protect ourselves by reducing the pursuit of personal profit at the expense of others and by taxing the personal incomes and personal wealth of the richest members of society. This is particularly important given the role extreme wealth and consumption play in driving the climate crisis.

Around 35,000 of the EU’s most vulnerable citizens died during the heatwave that struck just a few days ago.

Poorer people, both within and outside the EU, currently contribute very little to global CO₂ emissions. In the future, they should have the opportunity to earn more and improve their standard of living.

Remember: poor people in the EU and beyond who do not have access to air conditioning cannot simply escape extreme heat. And if they are forced to flee, there may be nowhere willing to receive them. by @philipjohnsen

Tax the wealthy.

Is This Extreme Weather the ‘New Normal’?

When political leaders turn their backs on the interests of the people and instead serve the short-term profits of a narrow economic elite, the very foundation of democracy is undermined.

Decisions are no longer made for the common good, but for those with the most capital.

Social cohesion crumbles because shared responsibility is replaced by competition and survival.
Public institutions are hollowed out, nature and the climate are sacrificed, and long-term investments in welfare, education, and social security are deprioritized in favor of quick gains.

A genuine climate policy must directly regulate the consumption of the wealthy, and shift resources from private luxury to public welfare.
Anything else is not pragmatism, but active complicity in climate collapse.

If everyone emitted like someone from the richest 1%, the carbon budget would be used up in fewer than three months.

Is This Extreme Weather the ‘New Normal’?

Summer in the Northern Hemisphere is unfolding like an apocalypse movie: a tale of heat, floods, and fire. But scientists warn that this may only be a preview of the unpredictable chaos to come if the world continues to burn fossil fuels.

In the Southern Hemisphere, as climate-related disasters become more frequent and intense, pressure on populations is increasing, primarily due to diminishing access to food and clean drinking water.

However, many Western countries are often criticized for denying or downplaying their responsibility for contributing to this situation through high levels of consumption, while failing to ensure that the production of goods is powered by sufficient amounts of sustainable energy.

United Nations Global Sustainable Development Report:
Quote
“Achieving the global warming target (with a significant overshoot above 1.5˚ C warming) would only be possible through a rapid and large scale deployment of technologies that remove CO2 from the atmosphere.

However, although technologies that can do so are under development, none as yet exist at the scale needed for the required impact.”

Donald Trump’s America is not a historical accident. It is a reaction.

That is why Greenland has become central.

When Donald Trump argued that Greenland should become American, he said something remarkable.

“Denmark does not own Greenland just because they sailed a ship there 500 years ago.”

The irony is historically enormous.

Because the same argument strikes at the very foundation of the United States, Canada, and other colonial settler states. Indigenous peoples in North America think exactly the same way, that European powers did not gain a moral right to land, sovereignty, and resources simply because they arrived with ships, flags, and military force.

For more than 500 years, the Western world order has been built on colonization, slavery, territorial expansion, and the idea of European white supremacy. The United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South America and parts of Africa were not created solely through immigration and development, but also through displacement, oppression, and the marginalization of Indigenous peoples.

The official story has long focused on civilization, progress, and democracy. Beneath that narrative lies another reality involving stolen land, forced assimilation, racial hierarchies, and economic systems built on the extraction of both people and nature.

Petroleum capitalism is losing its historical grip. For more than a century, oil, military power, and global capital have been closely connected. Wars, interventions, and geopolitical dominance have secured access to resources and maintained Western economic power. But the climate crisis and the global shift in power are now challenging the very foundation of this order.

Trumpism is a symptom of an empire and an economic model in crisis. As white majority dominance no longer feels guaranteed, nationalist movements, border politics, culture wars, and attempts to revive old ideas of strength, territory, and control begin to intensify.
