📍 Philippe The Original, Los Angeles Established in 1908 by French immigrant Philippe Mathieu, Philippe The Original is widely celebrated as the birthplace of the French Dip sandwich. According to restaurant lore, the dish was invented in 1918 when Mathieu accidentally dropped a sliced French roll into hot roasting-pan juices while preparing lunch for a police officer. The officer took the sandwich anyway and returned the next day asking for it dipped again. More than a century later, the restaurant retains its old-Los Angeles character, with communal wooden tables and dedicated behind-the-counter “carvers” who hand-slice slow-roasted beef, pork, lamb and turkey to order. Philippe’s is closely tied to the history of Route 66’s final miles through Southern California. During the Mother Road’s early years, when the highway officially ended at 7th and Broadway in Downtown Los Angeles before being extended to Santa Monica in 1936, Philippe’s Aliso Street location welcomed motorists completing the journey from Chicago. In 1951, construction of the Hollywood Freeway forced the restaurant to relocate a few blocks away to its current Alameda Street home. It continues to serve travellers exploring Route 66’s historic approach into Downtown Los Angeles before heading west towards the Pacific. Tips: Join the main queue and order directly from the carver when called. They will prepare your sandwich, pour your drinks and process your payment. Order your French Dip single-dip, with the top bun dipped; double-dip, with both halves dipped; or wet, with the entire sandwich submerged. Approach the famous house hot mustard with caution, as its powerful horseradish kick is legendary. Free parking is available behind the restaurant, accessible from College Street, but expect longer waits during weekday lunch hours and before Los Angeles Dodgers home games. by @philippetheog

How does Philippe The Original make their famous French dip sandwiches taste so good? Fresh bread, fresh meat, and a killer au jus. The dip is also made fresh daily. A traditional stock is combined with the pan drippings from every cut of meat roasted the day before then reduced down, explains GM Andrew Binder. Grab a @philippetheog French dip before you head to @kcrw Summer Nights this Saturday, August 15. Eat a historic sandwich then party in historic Union Station to sets by KCRW DJs @jrocc210, @luxxury, plus hypnotic grooves from @rio.kosta. It's free – you just have to RSVP at the link in bio. 🔗 🎥: @elinashatkin by @philippetheog
